Another ex-athlete, like Fidrych, about my age who died, albeit from a much different cause.

Not overly talented, but he was popular beyond his ability while he was on the Knicks, and I remember the nickname Gondo.

Had a rather strange jumper, if I remember correctly, although I am not too sure about that one.

Sad.

I was kind of freaked when I saw this. I remember him when I was in high school and one of the original UNLV Running Rebels!!

I remember him well from my youth. I believe him, Ray Williams, and Toby Knight were rookies together.

Good memory!!!

1977 draft for NY.....

1 - Ray Williams, Minnesota
2 - Glen Gondrezick, Nevada-Las Vegas
2 - Toby Knight, Notre Dame
3 - Lloyd McMillian, Long Beach State
4 - Steve Hayes, Idaho State
5 - Bill Terry, Monmouth
6 - Jerry Graycraft, Milligan
7 - Tom Weadock, St. John's
8 - Ken Slappy, St. Peter's

It was a lousey draft that year for the NBA. 1st 2 rounds:

# Team Name College/HS/Country
1 MIL Kent Benson Indiana
2 KCK Otis Birdsong Houston
3 MIL Marques Johnson UCLA
4 WA1 Greg Ballard Oregon
5 PHO Walter Davis North Carolina

8 SEA Jack Sikma Illinois Wesleyan
9 DEN Tom LaGarde North Carolina
10 NYK Ray Williams Minnesota
11 MIL Ernie Grunfeld Tennessee

13 CHI Tate Armstrong Duke
14 ATL Tree Rollins Clemson

16 GSW Rickey Green Michigan
17 WA1 Bo Ellis Marquette
18 GSW Wesley Cox Louisville
19 POR Rich Laurel Hofstra
20 PHI Glenn Mosley Seton Hall

3 PHI Wilson Washington Old Dominion
4 NYK Glen Gondrezick Nevada-Las Vegas
5 MIL Glenn Williams St. John's
6 POR Kim Anderson Missouri
7 IND Alonzo Bradley Texas Southern
8 CHI Steve Sheppard Maryland
9 KCK Eddie Owens Nevada-Las Vegas
10 NYK Toby Knight Notre Dame

12 HOU Larry Moffett Nevada-Las Vegas
13 CHI Mark Landsberger Arizona State
14 DET Ben Poquette Central Michigan
15 SAS Jeff Wilkins Illinois State
16 GSW Ricky Love Alabama-Huntsville
17 WA1 Phil Walker Millersville
18 HOU Robert Reid St. Mary's (TX)
19 POR T.R. Dunn Alabama
20 PHI Bob Elliott Arizona
21 PHI Herm Harris Arizona
22 NOJ Essie Hollis St. Bonaventure

MIlwaukee had 3 of the top 11 picks. They were rebuilding after trading away Jabbar.

Benson had just lead Indiana to an undefeated season and Marquis Johnson was the Stud at UCLA. Notice Grunfeld at no. 11? Sikma at 8 proved to be the best player. Otis BIrdsong looked like a can't miss star in college. Very similar to H20 in fact.

I really would have liked to have seen Knight develop a bit more. Probably would have ended up scoring in the low to mid 20's if he had never gotten injured.

Yeah, Toby would've had a solid career if not for the injury. I recall him as a player that could do a little of everything well but nothing on a spectacular level. I recall he signed a decent contract in his 2nd or 3rd year then got that devastating injury a few weeks later.
