“…Carlos Cabezas(1.86-PG) will be one of the most highly sought players this summer. According to statements that he made on his own website, the New York Knicks and Real Madrid are interested in signing him. He recently said that he is in a good age(28) to try for the NBA

His assist rates are a really low for a PG (that may be a function of Euro ball) but his shooting is extremely efficient, especially from 3 point land.

I'll wait till I see where we end up in the draft to evaluate whether I think this is a something worth looking into

Hey, the Knicks are active trying to find good players to sign. They're doing it by unconventional ways, at least for them. That is a plus for me.

The Knicks are considering signing him to evaluate him this summer. I see no negatives in letting this guy come to Summer League and showing his worth. If he does, he may be the backup to Duhon for the year, depending on what we do in the Draft.

Like I said on the other thread, he is ok, but not an improvement over anything we have right now. I could not believe when I heard this rumor.

This is a 2mm per year backup. Thats all. Thats all we are looking for. The kid is not starter material. All he has to do is pass and hit a three once in a while. 15 min a game.

Exactly. It would be nice if they could build through the draft, but I don't see a problem if they look elsewhere.

And the fact is that all he's got right now is a summer invitation. No full guarantee of anything, so there is nothing negative in this.

Agreed - I think any opportunity to add a solid, smart (28-year old) player with great international experience running a team is win-win.

We need smart team players in this system -- this guy will know what to do with the ball and it looks like he will defend and play very hard (physical).

We need these kind of intangibles in the worst way.

That's the problem with Knicks fans, including myself at times.

They expect every acquisition to be a homerun.

That hasn't happned since we got Ewing.

I would think the Knicks might want to go back to the hotel room to get head and not do it right on the court, but I guess this is just another example of declining standards and tattoos ruining the NBA.

He could potentially be a Ricky Rubio default plan.

Im okay with it as long as he isnt signed to a long term deal

Who is Carlos Cabezas?
By Jon Pastuszek
Wed, 05/13/2009 - 3:32pm

It looks like Ricky Rubio may have some familiar company in the NBA this coming season.

Carlos Cabezas in Euroleague actionCarlos Cabezas in Euroleague actionA source close to Hoops Daily has confirmed that Spanish National Team point-guard Carlos Cabezas, who played against Rubio for Unicaja in the ACB this year, has signed with Winnersfactory of Barcelona and American agent Kenny Grant and will be available for NBA teams to sign as a free-agent this off season.

Cabezas, part of the Gold Medal Spanish National team of the 2006 World Championships, has no buyout clause in his contract, making him a very appealing option for teams looking for backcourt help.

The 28-year-old is expected to garner interest from a handful of NBA and European teams, and has already been rumored to be on Donnie Walsh’s summer shortlist.

At 1.87 cm, (6'2") 205, Cabezas is pure point-guard who excels at managing and distributing. He possesses sticky handles, deceptive quickness and a great understanding of the game. He is a precision shooter with high percentages from both long and short range and, although not overly athletic, he has a good frame with solid foot speed and can stay in front of most guards on defense. Word is that his IQ is off the charts and his teams have won on every level. In Spain, his nickname is "The Brain".

"He makes everyone around him better," said an NBA scout speaking anonymously to Hoops Daily. "He is the consummate team player."

Said another scout, “Cabezas could play in the NBA easily.”

Cabezas, with his ability to play both a half-court and up-tempo style, could be seen as the ideal fit for the Knicks. He would blend naturally with Mike D'Antoni's system while providing some much needed direction and support for the NBA best Euro-equipped Head Coach and bolstering a thin Knicks back court.

"He played on a team that won the World Championship," said Rockets forward Luis Scola back in April, who also played professionally in Spain. "I believe he can play for the Knicks. He is strong and smart."

Although Cabezas cannot be drafted in June due to his age, his market is linked to the draft and how teams fill their backcourt needs. But, with his desire to play in the NBA and very few obstacles preventing him from making the jump, expect to see Cabezas in an NBA uniform next season.

Stay tuned for more updates from Hoops Daily as we continue to break this story in the future.
