Stephen A. Smith, who had a meteoric rise at ESPN, screaming his way into his own show, is out at the all-sports network.

ESPN will not renew Smith's contract. His last day at the network, where he was a featured NBA reporter, will be May 1. "We decided to move in different directions," an ESPN spokesman said.

Smith, a former Daily News sportswriter, and ESPN could not come to terms on a new deal. Industry sources said ESPN wanted Smith to take a paycut.

In a statement, Smith said: "It's been a wonderful, wonderful ride filled with great accomplishments and great friendships. ... But nothing lasts forever. It's time to move on."

Smith's high point at ESPN was when he hosted his own daily show, "Quite Frankly," which launched in August 2005 and lasted 17 months.

Watch him go to TNT. But is the world ready for him and Barkley in the same room?

I'd say he goes to MSG, except that one little thing that MSG is cheap. They wouldn't pay Kenny Smith the bucks b/c he's a national tv personality. SAS is going to demand much more money.

He'd slot in well at TNT. I'm not sure the FAN or YES will be calling for him.

He had a good radio show when it was he and Brandon Tierney on ESPN 1050. If you're a hoops fan, you liked that show. I used to listen to it every afternoon. Stephen A's style does get annoying but he knows his hoops (basically), BT was very good on that show and kept him in check and I always liked how Smith was usually the first one to shed light on an NBA rumor. He'll catch on somewhere...

I agree. BT was his perfect foil. He needs someone to keep him in check.

Maybe NBATV could give him a show.

They can slot it between "Stars on Stars" and reruns of summer sanders interviews.
