Wow I cant believe it. DJ died of a heart attack young Danny Ainge had a heart attack young Bird has had heart problems? I don't get it these guys are young guys who have had a lifetime of cardio vascular fitness. I cant believe they are smokers--it's just crazy that they are all teammates and young to have these problems?

Diet of course. But something science is starting to understand (last 10 years or so) is the role of emotions in disease. The heart (as well as other organs) are covered in neuroptide receptors. The everyday lingo of neuroptides, as mentioned in the movie "What the bleep do we know", are "The molecules of emotion". To make a very long story short, outside of diet and exercise, unexpressed or repressed emotions can lead to illness. Not saying it is true in these cases at all, just another factor to consider.

This ''lifetime of cardio vascular fitness'' may also be part of the problem.

Their bodies have endured far more than any other, their hearts endure more pressure, more rate increase etc... Stress is at a very high level, jet lag, moving from town to town every other night. That kind of lifestyle may not be easy on your bdy as a whole.

Excellent points. "Fitness" and "health" aren't synonyms. Fitness is an important aspect of good health, but health is a whole body and holistic affair that involves your nervous system, mental health, emotional life, genetics, diet, lifestyle, exposure to pathogens, environment.

They are also larger people (height/weight wise) and the average life expectancy of professional athletes is lower than the average person I believe - I dont have any facts to back that up but I remember seeing it somewhere.

I think it probably has a little to do with diet, but a lot to do with performing at such a high level, maybe supplements as well. You can only tax the body so much before it gets damaged. There is definitely credibility to the emotions playing a role in sickness.

Although blocked arteries are usually a combination of poor diet and genetics - high cholesterol. Tons of cardio cant fight poor cholesterol genetics.
