I posted this on the Gamepicker thread and felt the topic should be posted on it's own thread. I am curious of the board's thoughts, concerns, and commnents about professional basketball's current era and regime. I feel sympathetic towards todays children who are NBA fans.

Some of my comments and solutions:

1- Bring back the old rules, hand checking, physical defense- it is mandatory that they allow the player's to play again and stop being sissies. The new rules have totally destroyed the league.
Lebron James drives to the hoop and if someone sneezes on him, he looks as if he might cry. This is because the NBA has turned into a gonads coddling phoney valued capitalistic corporate entertainment organization instead of a professional entity focused on team/fan base harmony and winning.

2- I agree with contraction- There are not enough star/good players to match the number of teams. Contraction is a good thing. Subtract 2 to 4 teams.

3- Mandatory age 21 or 4 year post high school limit- That way we can only hope for a Jordan, Bird, Magic, Barkley, Ewing type league again. A mandatory age limit of 21 or 4 year post high school wait might help college basketball develop more stars and will definitely help the NBA go back to it's roots. The Derek Harper (my favorite all time player) interview broke down the current state of the NBA real well. There are way too many kids and babies in the league who are not ready mentally, emotionally, psychologically and developmentally to handle the daily rigor of professional basketball.

4- Bring back the NBA on NBC. Nothing was better or will ever be better. The openining monologues and theme music really set the tone. Marv Albert, Matt Goukas, Fratello were all great. It is not acceptable for the Knicks vs. Bulls games to just be a thing of the past along with the quality of the NBA post Jordan.

I am only 26 and have been watching the NBA since 1987 since the age of 5 (I remember all the players really well and learned the rules on my own over the years) with the Pistons vs. Lakers/Celtics rivalries. In the 80's and 90's and during previous decades, the athletes played because it was their career and they loved it and worked thier a--ses off to win. Now it's all about bling bling, cars, tattoos, $$$, looking cool, dances.

To get the point across- watch the 1990 All Star Game and then watch any All Star game from 2000- on.

The NBA is a joke now and it's unacceptable. All the old school players from 50's to 90's ALL KNOW IT. Bill Russell, Clyde, Ewing, Jordan- probably can't stand what they are watching.

What happened to playing basketball at the schoolyard or park in the day time, going home to watch the NBA on NBC and then coming back outside to play more b-ball and discuss the games with your homies.

I agree with absolutely everything you said! Stern made an attempt to make the NBA more fan-friendly when in reality he just distanced fans.

I think kids should be allowed to go from high school straight into the NBA. Some of the best players we have in the league did not going to college. Kobe, Lebron, KG, Dwight Howard, Amare, Jermaine O'Neal before his injury. If players are ready let them go to the NBA.

if they contract, cut the playoffs down to 8 total. its lame that less teams are out of the playoffs then in.

id like to see some of these other items, though i doubt with the $$$ involved nothing will change unless the possible labor probs do occur. the age increase for entering the draft might get done since the commish would like to see that go up from the current requirements.

you had plenty of others who stink too, and are now outta the league. king david is looking to save teams from themselves in this regard.

There should be a more organized D-League that works like the minor leagues, and players should be allowed to come from highschool if they want.

Talent level is a lot better than its been in years.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

And you have plenty of players that played two or more years that are trash. If a player is ready they are ready. This is propaganda by the NCAA to get players to stay along with the league. College basketball was taking a dip in ratings because many of the good players went straight to the NBA instead of going to college. Then when the rules came back out that the players had to spend at least one year in college the result was the ratings went back up.

Do you think Kobe or Lebron should have gone to college? I know someone that was telling me about Lebron when he was 15 and that he was NBA ready. Do you think extra years in college would have helped AI or Dwight Howard. Unless someone is going to the top 4 year colleges don't expect much training going on. A player can learn by experience.

As far as contracts, if a team is dumb enough to give a player a big contract then that it is that team's fault. Just like we sign Duhon for two years teams can do the same thing. Owners of these teams make billions of dollars off these players. If the owners have a problem then they should not give the gm's the ok to give long contracts.

I wonder how much worse the bust rate is for the high school players than the college players. Its probably not that much worse, just more high profile. I would let teams draft high schoolers- but I would first create a minor league. And I would also make the draft 4 rounds long so you could build up your minor league team, accomdate the influx of draft eligible players and have some skin in the game in terms of the prospects you have there.

And heck, if the NBA really wants to go international- why not make the minor league play in Europe or something?

busts occur all over... how do you know a guy is ready at any level. you can look at most drafts and see that gems were missed all the time be it hs kids or 3/4 yr college kids. as you noted, its all about the $$$ for ncaa and players/owners at the pro lev.

otjt is good when you can get it and on bad teams its easier to get. its an interesting prob. outside of moses malone and lebron, who was dominating as a rookie out of hs, asking cuz i just cant think of others. both (owners and union) need to work with each other or they will end up ruining it for all involved.

king david is getting his bargaining position ready. it makes sense to try to protect the teams from themselves in his book, as it does for the union to protect itself.

That's why I say there would be fewer big busts if there were a true minor league. I think there would be fewer reaches, players who needed to get developed would have a chance to (the competition would basically be like college ball but the kids actually get paid for their work) and prospects would not be as rushed.

how would the minor league be stocked? expand the draft beyond 2 rounds again? undrafted free agents + the current DL players?

i could see the ncaa having a fit with this, which wouldnt bother me at all.

You don't have to kill your first year in the league to be consider a sucess, but you will understand how the NBA works. The sooner a player gets on the court the faster it will be for them to get adjusted to the league. Which is a totally different ball game from college. Look at the number of players that are good in college but were never able to adapt to the NBA. You could have gaven 15 years of college basketball to Ricky Davis and he still would be the same player. Shawn Kemp in one year in the NBA turn his game around. Scottie Pippen said the best player on the Blazers when he was on the team did not even start or get playing time. He was referring to J O'Neal out of HS.

On a side note the thing the league is discussing is all politics. They want to have their cake and eat it too. Colleges make billions off players and these kids don't get paid. You have players like Jalen Rose who had to borrow money from a fan to get something at restaurant because he did not have enough money. Movie stars make money all time. We don't ask them to return their money if the movie sucks.

Great post.. I have been screaming this for years..

1) The league has gone soft.. In an attempt to make the game more exciting and more international friendly, stern has tampered with the rules too much.. now we have a league in which stars were manufactured because they now can't be touched while trying to score.. watch how wade and lebron back the ball up to halfcourt and make a bull charge at the basket, collide into a defender who is most often in retreat and still get the foul call... It hurts the game.. especially when the calls are so lopsided in favor of the "star" players.. Just take a look at the amount of FT's wade took in the finals a few years ago.. I think over a 3 game stretch he took over 60 FT's I think.. just disgusting..

2) I agree, too many teams and not really enough NBA talent.. Leading to teams overpaying clowns like zach randolph, and steve francis because they need so called "star" power... the talent is really stretched thin in this league..

3) Not sure about a mandatory age, but we should make the D-league, a real league.. Better pay, much better pay, which in turn will attract more talent and maybe some of the HS players will go there before they look at europe.. Make is a real D-league with good talent to chose from... Not guys who have a slim chance of ever being real player on the next level..

I pretty much agree with the rest of your post.. good work...

They really do need to put an age limit. I say age 21, or 4 years post high school. That way player's are given the appropriate instruction and time to participate in a professional league. The NFL has a minimum 3 year post high school limit I believe. I know the NBA is not the NFL, but there are very few Lebron's and Kobe's compared to the ridiculous amount of unprepared athletes who have ruined the NBA. Even Kobe and KG struggled mightily their rookie years largely due to their youth and lack of preparation.

There are no more legends in today's game in contrast to the abundance of legends in the past.

Look at the previous stars in the NBA:

Ewing, Jordan, Barkely, Isiah, Malone, Stockton, Bird, Magic, Olajuwon, Drexler, Pippen, Kemp, Payton, Shaq, David Robinson, Miller, Dominique, KJ, Mourning, Worthy, Jabbar, Parish, Mchale, Mutombo, Dumars, Aguire and probably much more that dont come to mind right now.

Today's stars:

Kobe, Lebron, Wade and Duncan- that's it. Noone else to me is that impressive. Stoudemire, Howard and Nowitzki are good player's but not special in my eyes. They don't have any moves or leadership qualities.

The same concept goes for yester year's role player's compared to the current role player's in the NBA.

I agree the game has completely gone soft and the officiating and rules has completely destroyed and taken over the game. It's all the same crap.

Player's now just trade baskets, have no post game, no mid range game, play no defense, no go to moves, no arsenal and reportoire of moves, no hook shot. It's all about looking cool, dunking and spotting up for 3's. When the 3 point line came out in 1979, players avoided it like a disease. Now the players run to the 3 point line more agressive than subway commuters trying to obtain a seat on the train.

Every play is the same. The offensive player dribbles the ball down the court without any pressure or token defense ever; the defender greets him at the 3 point line and always food petals all the way down because they are unwilling to play defense to go along with assimilating to this style to avoid being called for a foul. What happened to working hard to keep your man in front of you? What happened to help/team defense, full court pressure, press, good man to man defense?

Why can't teams (especially the Knicks) play defense when you have college teams that play their hearts out on D and don't even get paid for it.

you guys need to go back and review the game tapes. wade was so phenomenal, clutch and ballsy that people were only left shaking their heads and muttering, “the refs must be fixing this." he received maybe two - TWO - questionable calls that whole series. you go back and compare that to any superstar in the finals - dr. j, magic, bird, jordan, duncan, kobe, any of them. wade gets tagged with this unfair and untrue label because he just blew peoples' minds with one of the all-time greatest finals performances ever and people couldn’t believe he did it on his own.
