Frye had 12-4-3 last night in 17 minutes and looked pretty good from the few minutes that I watched. If he'd take a one year deal I'd give him a cheap deal, but he looks good enough to get a deal with a lot of clubs. I bet he stays out West.
Oh well if he looked good in the few minutes you watched then without a doubt we should sign him
I don't think Channing has any desire to ever come back to NY. He made a few "circus" comments after he left. I think he's happier in a slower paced environment. Plus, not sure how he would help us. If we are looking for a big man we need a shot blocking, rugged type. I'd hate to waste money on another soft big man. I also think that D'Antoni will want someone very versatile that can guard all 3 front court positions(at least that's what he should be looking for). Not sure Frye can guard any.
Easy bro. He just doesn't look like the same nervous kid anymore. I'm not saying, hey let's sign him to a multi-year deal. I would think that we're going to sign someone to the LLE, or the MLE for one year. If we can't get a serious vet because we're not a contending team, then we could do worse than Channing.
JW, there's some truth to what you're saying - Frye can shoot the ball and he's not terrible, but I gotta agree with most here - he's very soft. All-around soft as in no rebounding, no defense soft. Not interested in bringing him back and it's a shame too because I was actually OK with drafting Frye at the time. Unfortunately, he's nowhere near the player I thought he'd be...
I'd still like to see them draft Jeff Teague with the pick if we remain in the 8th spot and he's still on the board. This kid's got dynamite skills and I'd love to see him be MDA's do-it-all scoring floor leader for the forseeable future. With the 8th pick he makes the most sense to me - I like him the best of all the PGs available and better than any other player that'll be there at that spot. Now if we wind up lucking out in the lottery and we draft higher, you adjust accordingly and maybe go after a super potential guy like a DeRozan or someone else. But if those guys are gone, I'd be fine with Teague. Adequate size at 6'2" (doesn't have Tyreke Evans-type size but he's not one of these barely 6' guys either), very good handle, sometimes a little too flashy and reckless with the ball but he's shown the ability to set up others (this aspect of his game should only get better over time as they assemble some good talent around him btw), can get anywhere on the court he wants at any time, can shoot, makes his FTs and he'll defend (guy got plenty of steals and I've seen him surprisingly get up to block a shot or two on occasion). Very exciting player to add to the mix here. Just like Bayless last year (the guy I wanted in the draft), I don't care if I have a floor general that's offensive-minded. If anything I consider that a plus. There are other PGs in this draft who will be steady performers, but I don't see any of them with this kid's skills. HUGE upgrade over Chris Duhon. He's got take-over-the-game type ability and as he matures and fills out a little bit, I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be a very good player in the NBA for a long time.
After that, I'd look to sure up the roster with as many lower picks as we can get our hands. I think there will be a ton of talent from say 15 all the way into the second round/possibly even undrafted that can help us and either fill holes or wind up being adequate replacements for some of the players we have now:
- DeJuan Blair (Guy's a beast and will be a good NBA player - tough, rugged interior presence with a huge wingspan that won't disappoint and would serve as an adequate replacement for Lee).
- Sam Young (Good budding all-around skills at the 3 and could replace Chandler in the rotation if they decided to use Wilson in a trade).
- Taj Gibson (Would make for an excellent reserve PF - a plus athlete who can score and defend inside. PAC 10 defensive player of the year was one of the best shot-blockers in America this past season. A smart player who also makes good decisions, can handle the ball a little and run the floor).
- KC Rivers (Nice two-way shooting guard prospect who has decent size at 6'5" and can really shoot the ball).
- Jack McClinton (Scorer's mentality. I could absolutely see him excelling in the NBA in a Leandro Barbosa/Nate Robinson scoring guard off the bench role. Not a true PG but he's got enough handle and court awareness to play some point if need be).
- Trevor Booker (At 6'7" he's not the tallest PF ever but he's a wide body that's aggressive & possesses a lot of nice skills to offer a team playing inside. I think he compares very favorably to DeJuan Blair/Anthony Mason/Paul Millsap myself).
- AD Vassallo (6'6" shooting guard from VA Tech has plus size for the position and a very smooth floor game. Outside of the stinker he had in the NIT against Baylor where his whole team played poorly, this kid impressed me every time I saw him play).
Also, trade targets for me - Anthony Randolph or Kosta Koufos. What can you say, Briggs was right on this kid Randolph last year and deserves some credit. Randolph's got tremendous all-around skills and he's only gonna get better. Not sure I see the Kevin Garnett comparison but to me he's a combination of Odom on offensive with Tayshaun Prince/Ty Thomas defensive ability all in 1 package. GS would be crazy to trade him but I'd still call and look to put something together using Lee, Nate and Chandler - all three of those guys can be replaced. And I like Briggs' thought process on trading for Koufos as well. He's the type of center prospect that MDA would be interested in - legit 7', can hold his own inside, shoot it well with nice range, run the court while eating up enough space to supply adequate defense. Like Randolph, Utah would be nuts to deal him, but you never know until you pick up the phone.
Impossible to grab all of these guys I suppose but as of right now, this continues to be the blueprint I'd look to work from. The two trade targets might be a little bit of a reach but we at least have a real good chance to add a solid/plus PG prospect and some quality low end talent in this draft that can really help shape this roster rather quickly.
