"By the way, Chad Ford is reporting that John Wall, the best high school player in the U.S. might declare for the draft. He has had five years of eligibility and will be 19 in the calendar year, and this might make him draft eligible. If he comes out, he goes in the
top 3."

I was just noticing that too. This is pretty big news fellas. If we stay at 8 that means another player who wouldn't have gotten bumped down to us, does.
They say he is a top 2 or 3 pick in this years draft. He is a PG.

John Wall to Be in the 2009 Draft?

High-school senior PG John Wall, the consensus top high-school senior in America and potential no.1 overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, is apparently exploring the possibility of entering his name in this year’s draft instead. This news comes courtesy of ESPN.com’s draft guru Chad Ford:

Mike, FL: Is John Wall the No. 1 pick in 2010 Draft. He was awesome at the Hoop Summit game.

SportsNation Chad Ford: He was awesome and he’ll compete with Ed Davis and a few other freshmen for that. However, there is some buzz that Wall believes he might be eligible for THIS year’s draft. I’ve been doing some digging and will be filing a story later today. The short rub is this: Wall is a 5th year senior and depending on how you read the collective bargaining agreement, 5th year seniors are eligible for the draft as long as the turn 19 in the calander year (Wall does). The league is taking a wait and see approach. If he declares, they’ll research and make a ruling. If he does declare and is ruled eligible (two big ifs) he’s a Top 5 pick in this draft. Maybe Top 3.

For those of you who’ve never seen Wall, his game has a lot in common with Derek Rose’s. He’s not necessarily the total package as a prospect that Rose was, though, because Rose was widely regarded as being a great, coachable kid in addition to being an elite talent (Wall isn’t). But, if he’s in the draft, Wall will instantaneously vault right to the top of the class and could very well end up being the second player selected after Blake Griffin.

I’ll say it again: It may be a weak draft overall, but it could end up having serious depth at PG. There’s going to be several quality NBA starters at PG that emerge from this year’s pool.

on the other hand he might cause someone else to NOT declare this year in hopes of landing the overall #1 pick next season.

Was Blatche drafted before the one-and-done rule, or was he ok because he was drafted out of prep-school as opposed to being drafted from a high school?

Yes, the latest CBA didn't go into effect until after the draft.

Oh sht.

•Donatas Motiejunas leaning toward entering the draft?

Chad Ford of ESPN.com reports that “the buzz” is that Donatas Motiejunas will enter his name in the draft.

The buzz after the game was that Motiejunas was leaning toward declaring for the 2009 draft. Although he needs to get stronger and keep working on his jumper, he is a legit prospect. One NBA GM I spoke with said he thought Motiejunas would be a top-12 pick in this year's draft. Two other international scouts who have seen much more of him think his range is 15 to 25. All of them felt that with another year in Lithuania under his belt, he would be a surefire lottery pick in 2010.

DraftExpress’ Mike Schmidt was actually at the Hoop Summit in Portland, and had a chance to talk with Motiejunas on multiple occasions over the course of the week. Motiejunas initially stated that that’s not really the case. “I think I would benefit from another year in Europe,” Motiejunas told Schmidt. “I’m not really thinking about the NBA draft right now.”

After the Hoop Summit game, Motiejunas changed his tune slightly: ““My dad and my agent are going to evaluate my options and we will consider entering based on what they find.”

To clear this matter up, we reached out directly to Motiejunas’ agent, Herb Rudoy of Interperformances, to see what his thoughts were.

“We don’t know right now what we’re going to do with Donatas,” Rudoy said immediately as he picked up the phone, even before we had time to ask the question. “It’s going to come down to the last minute to make a decision. We don’t want to rush anything.”

When told what Motiejunas had originally said about not thinking about the NBA, Rudoy did not dispute that: “It’s probably correct that he won’t enter. That’s something that a lot of NBA teams want to know right now. We’re going to be very careful about how we go about this decision, since this is something that is going to affect his career in a major way. We’ve learned from the case of Marc Gasol and Tiago Splitter how beneficial it is for young European players to gain experience”

Rudoy is in a unique position, having represented fellow Lithuanian big man Martynas Andriuskevicius, who many feel entered the NBA draft too early at the tender age of 19. He ended up being picked in the second round, despite garnering considerable hype from certain media outlets, and was out of the NBA after two seasons in which he only played 9 total minutes. Andriuskevicius is just now starting to get his career back on track at age 23, and is currently averaging a respectable 9 points and 6 rebounds in 20 minutes on the top-ranked team in the Spanish second division, Alicante.

Motiejunas appears to be in an excellent position, as he is under no contract restrictions for next season, and is free to move to any team in Europe. “We have complete flexibility” Rudoy told us. “There are a lot of possibilities. We’re going to make sure we make the best possible decision for Dontas’ career. No matter what happens, he’s going to be in great shape.”

Motiejunas is this year's "next Dirk"

Can't see us going there. Anything that makes the draft deeper helps us to potentially buy a late pick and get value.

Wall is probably back in the draft.
From another forum found by Rockmaninoff:
Grandadmiral
Wall can absolutely be eligible for this draft if he wants to be.

The only issue is whether or not he loses that eligibility by actually graduating high school prior to the draft. If he is determined to be in this upcoming draft, he can simply choose to not graduate. That can be accomplished without TOO much trouble.

It is also possible that the NBA (with consent of the NBPA and the 30 members of the board of governors) would allow him to graduate and still be eligible, because the intent of that rule is obviously not to discourage someone from completing their high school education. That part is murky, but again, if Wall wants to, he certainly can make himself eligible for this draft.

It is the other part of the draftexpress link that is more interesting. It isn't clear that Wall WANTS to be in this draft, which is the ultimate issue. But perhaps part of that lack of desire is him thinking he might have to delay his high school graduation? That is something that needs further investigation. It is all about what his desires are.

Donnie has to get another first round pick because this draft is improving by the second.

Totally. And again that time of the year most exciting for Knicks fans is almost upon us

Another 1st rounder will be available to us to buy. We have so many needs. I can see them wanting to get a player that can contribute who slides. But then again they will try for help in trades and FA first, so maybe we do draft "unready" talent...
