you build a team with players that complement each other. there is no such thing as "building around a player." it's such a bastardized phrase. and that misused phrase, is mostly used in a negative light. "i don't want to build around X". what does that even mean? if you get a good player, you want to keep him b/c, you know, he's GOOD. then you try to get other players that work with him to make your team better. does it have to do with salary? b/c salary does not apply to the ny knicks.

there are a handfull of guys in this league that are 'build around' players. These are guys that if you stick a bunch of good role players around you will have a good team. Dwight Howard, Lebron, Wade, KG, Chris Paul, Dirk, Nash, Kobe and possibly Amare and Yao are all guys that will take you to the playoffs every year if they have any kind of supporting cast.

To me these are the only level of guys you let good players walk in order to sign. If we let Lee and Nate walk but bring in Wade we will be a playoff team for the next ten years because he's going to make every guy around him better.

If we let Lee and Nate walk and pay Bosh or Joe Johnson $17mm we still a 30 win team. What have we accomplished?

you would have bosh or joe johnson - a legitimate robin. you still have to acquire batman tho. but there's a chance you may not get batman at all and would only have the wonder twins. batman don't give no sh t about the wonder twins and their stupid pet monkey. and didn't one of them always form water or something stupid like that? what enticed kg to go to boston? or shaq to go to miami?

If you trade for Bosh, it means you're trying to do one of two things:
a) make subsequent moves to free up cap space and then pair Bosh with a max FA. What have we accomplished? We'd have one of the top duos in the league. OR
b) You're abandoning the 2010 plan, in which case you keep Lee, Nate, and Duhon long-term and easily have a playoff team to start building with--Unless you're saying all of those guys will be included in any trade to get Bosh.

I'd prefer plan A because I think it's more likely to lead to a championship contender.

Was Ewing or Starks or Houston or Spree or Camby a Batman? Just sayin.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)
what is this 'build a team around (player x)' nonsense?
