Courtney Sims Named D-League MVP

Apr 06, 2009 3:30 PM EST
Courtney Sims, who appeared in 32 games with the Iowa Energy, has been named the NBA Development League’s Most Valuable Player for the 2008-09 season. Sims, a 6-11 center, who is currently in the middle of his second 10-day contract with the New York Knicks, was selected by a vote of the NBA D-League’s head coaches. NBA D-League president Dan Reed will present Sims with his award prior to the start of an upcoming Knicks game at Madison Square Garden.

Prior to joining the Knicks on March 23, Sims was leading the Energy with 22.8 points per game, while shooting 61 percent (277-of-458) from the field to go along with averages of 11.0 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 38.8 minutes. Twice called-up by the Phoenix Suns this season, Sims appeared in one game for Phoenix this season and has yet to appear in a game for New York.

“Courtney really has earned this honor, and I’m proud of him,” said Energy head coach Nick Nurse. “His development in the last 12 months has been outstanding - he has grown his offensive game, his competitiveness and his athleticism. The improvements in his game are a total credit to him for all of the hard work he's put in over the last year and if he can improve as much in the next 12 months as he has in the last, I know he'll be a great asset to the Knicks or any NBA team.”

How come the Knicks won't play him? Is it because they don't want anyone to see him play in the NBA and then sign him on the cheap??

I think it's a few things... 's pride (and wanting the Knicks to win instead of training an NBDL player), Donnie deciding a few other player's fate, and, as you said, retaining Sims on the cheap

we were bragging about snagging him, now we won't play him

Breen needs more time to see Jeffries on the floor so he has a chance to start a bromance with him.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

LOL, there is some type of love affair going on there. If Jeffries laces up his sneakers properly Breen is ready to give him some motivational accolades. They treat that man like he just got off the short bus and learn how to go #2 by himself. Ridiculous.

The guy is mvp of the Dleague and with the team less than 20 days and we are crying about losing him? They guy is signed to be a practice player for eddy and get a "tryout".

its not like his play got better because of his MVP award! Im sure he knew his role before signing with the Knicks and what was expected of him.

Nobody else signed him and with roster spots opening up with us he might be able to stick with the team after summer play. The knicks might be his best chance to MAKE A TEAM and get some minutes next year.

I wish I had some of Breen's quotes to post. It'll be the 4th quarter of a game and he'll say something like,

"Jeffries at the line... eight points, five rebounds, two assists tonight, another great game. He's been playing so great lately Clyde. You know the stats just don't tell the story. He can bend, er defend five different positions, (knicks just gave up 120), and he's really becoming a leader out there."

Nice Breen. That's why no GM would touch the last two years of his deal if he came with a pot of gold and a hooker.

Jared is like Herb Williams during his Knick career. Being a nice guy can get you far in this league.

Btw, if Jared ever became a ref...Mike Breen would Jizz in his pants.

On Sims...

He has to pay his dues like anyone else. He has to learn plays and show in practice that he can fit what the Knicks need @ center.

Now Joe Crawford was just resigned for the remainder of the season...we haven't seen him play either...

But playing in the d-league is one thing.....but getting the MVP??? Wow....I mean he did get the MVP of the all-star game too....sheesh!!! The guy has more credentials as a pro than any Knick currently on the roster. He's gotta be a starting center at the nba level, right?...yet he was on Pheonix and they didn't retain him????

Dudes....if they retire Sims jersey in the D-league than something is wrong, lol.

So that's what Donald Sterling told Dunleavy to offer for him?

Joe Crawford's the only D-league guy we've signed for the whole year.

Sims, Samb and Nichols all haven't gotten more than a 10 day yet. They're making their evals in practice- stuff we can't see and its frustrating. But the idea here is these guys are people who will be competing in camp next year. With a handful of contracts running off the books, there will be spots and we won't be tying up any long term dollars- so these guys could very well be relevant next year.

Yeah were in the N League--meaning we have nothing to play for. I would think if you have nothing to play for--we have seen the same guys lose 50 games--so we kind of know the deal--that we would atleast give some nice burn to the two young players. Im just trying to use a tad bit of common sense. The ONLY thing we have to play for is draft position and see what younger players have--nothing else--PRIDE after 77 games --that went out the window at 21-25

Now is the time to LOSE and play the new guys--rest the older guys or limit their minutes so we don't have some kind of crazy injury problem

we're not playing him because it's absolutely imperative to finish out the season strong by winning as many games as possible so the players can go into the offseason proud of themselves.

Yeah man, its really confusing why he has such a man crush on Jeffries. Chandler will have had a huge, stat filling game, and Breen's like, "Jeffries has really been the best player on the floor for the Knicks tonight Clyde." And Clyde either goes silent, or starts talking about gardening in his house in the Caribbean.

i swear to God, Jefferies literally makes me cringe in pain whenever i watch him on the basketball court... when he takes a jumpshot it makes me nauseous, for real... i can barely think of any worse starter in the NBA than Fishlips... he's painful to watch.
