I'm just numb over this. Just disturbing that a product of a civilized society could be so resolute in his cruelty. Well, perhaps, given the relationship between police officers and our communities I shouldnt be so surprised by this, but Officer Powell's not even remotely human, lack of compassion is still shocking --- even for a cop.

ESPN needs to calm down with their anti-TO agenda and curb their relentless coverage over him skipping a VOLUNTARY workout, and shine a piercing light on this story and this human garbage posing as an officer of the law.

Prayers go out to the Moats family. I'm so pissed. What a racist thug that cop is.

When a cop has his lights and sirens on, you have to pull over. End of story. Maybe if he pulled over and told the cop why they were racing to the hospital the cop would have let him go.

That was the same reaction I had. Had he done exactly that, I doubt think the situation would've happened.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

If I'm less than a minute from the hospital, I'm not stopping. This cop was a fool and even his police chief said so.

then don't be surprised if a cop gets aggressive after you refuse to stop and run a red light, no matter where you are going. you stop, and then the cop probably leads you to the hospital. unless its you yourself that needs medical attention or your wife is in labor you have no ground to stand on.

OK duke. His entire police department is doing backflips trying to apologize for his poor behavior and lack of judgment, but I guess you're the expert.

This is a quote from the police chief:
"When we in the command staff reviewed the tapes," he said, "we were embarrassed, disappointed – it's hard to find the right words and still be professional in my role as a police chief."

For some strange reason, some people find it necessary to defend the actions of cops even if they are blatantly wrong. Most cops suck but they are not ****ing dickheads. Some cops are ****ing dickheads and there is no reason to stick up for them.

See, the police chief should have consulted jaydh first. Then he would know that what the officer did was AOK!!

that cop woulda took his sweet ass time checking over his credentials had he pulled over & then probably laid some self righteous lecture on why speeding in a city zone is wrong... gimme a break trying to defend this dick cop's power trip... it's a shame that dick cops like this give other cops a bad rap.

I agree with you. While the cop should have known better, it probably would have been different if he had pulled over when ordered to. Too bad it worked out the way it did

the point was not him running the red light...which he ran responsibly and was actually waived through by the other driver I might add, the point is that this POS cop purposefully held him up for no other reason than to ensure that he would miss the last remaining moments of his mother-in-law's life. There was no threat, there was no issue, there was no problem. He CHOSE to be cruel just for kicks.

Moats was respectful, and the nurse even came down to communicate the gravity of the situation. Anybody who is defending this cop needs to re-evaluate their life. seriously.

Thomas' wife detained by Moats' cop

Another allegation has surfaced against the officer who prevented Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats from entering a hospital to see his dying mother-in-law last week.

The Dallas Morning News reports that Maritza Thomas, wife of former Cowboys linebacker Zach Thomas, was handcuffed and spent approximately three hours in jail after Dallas officer Robert Powell pulled her over for an illegal U-turn in July 2008.

"This in no way compares to what happened to Ryan Moats and his family," Thomas told The Morning News. "But we wanted to tell our story, not knowing how many others have been affected by Officer Powell. We know the vast majority of the Dallas police force are good and professional people, but this guy just seems excessive."

Four of the five tickets issued against Maritza Thomas were later dropped including failure to show proof of insurance, running a red light, improper address on driver's license and a registration sticker was not on the windshield. She accepted deferred adjudication for the illegal U-turn charge, and her record will be cleared next month.

"This situation never should've happened," Maritza Thomas' attorney, Brody Shanklin told The Morning News. "Unless extraordinary circumstances exist, no person should be arrested for a Class C citation. In this case, it was an example of Officer Powell being overzealous and exerting his authority in a manner that he never should have."

Bob Gorsky, Powell's attorney, defended his client's actions.

"I do understand that an arrest on multiple traffic charges happens often and is absolutely proper under these circumstances," Gorsky told The Morning News. "Often, when there are multiple charges, an arrest made and bond posted, some of the charges from a single event are later dropped."

Powell pulled over Moats for running a red light on his way to the hospital to see his dying mother-in-law. Powell detained Moats for 13 minutes, in which time his mother-in-law died. Powell issued an apology on Friday.

A Dallas police spokesman declined to comment but said the department would investigate any complaint filed against Powell, who is on administrative leave.

what's disgusting about this whole situation is the fact that this idiot power trippin' cop even still has a job at this point... the fact that he's still getting paid while he's on this "administrative leave" is even more disgusting... more like he's on vacation while this whole situation blows over... gimme a break... this cop shoulda had his badge taken away from him a long time ago... power trippin' a-holes like this don't deserve to be given any position of authority over anyone else.

To be fair, when I commented, I hadn't watched the video yet, just the description of a traffic violation. It seems like the cop went overboard.
