I may come across as a noob for this post, but does anyone know of any adult beginner/intermediate basketball classes in NYC?

Dating back to my childhood, I've never had any organized basketball instruction. As a result, all of my time spent dribbling in my driveway practicing my moves against the air, honing my personal shooting form (two hand jump shot), mimicking my fave NBA players have resulted in me having the passing instincts of an Eddy Curry (ie, none) and the basketball IQ of a peanut.

While my me-first game worked through my teen years in the playground when I was quicker than most, as I've grown older and my skills eroding from non-use (I'm in my 30s now), I *need* to expand my game, and learn some team fundamentals, that way I could live one of my life's dream's down the road and become a youth coach.

So... with all that said, I want to be made... or re-made into a more complete player. Anyone know where I could begin?

There's lots of instructional videos you can get. My guess is that most gyms offer some kind of lessons but they are probably expensive.

That's a good point. I've never played organized bball other than intramural but I've learned a lot from playing with guys who are better than I am.

That's how most of us learn... the best basketball lesson I ever got was from this lady Robin who played where I did... she had more polish than anyone else, but not as strong... she was always among the two or three best though, without exception. I got to know her, and long story short, I had a tendency not to look at the rim before I started my shot. I'd make a move, focus somewhere else to deceive, then look at the rim in the middle of my shot. Once she pointed that out, I took my game to the next level, because I started staring my defender down, or focussing elsewhere, but I'd focus on the iron once my feet set. Such a simple, yet accurate criticism that I probably wouldn't have noticed unless someone more polished pointed it out

I learned to lift weights by asking the biggest guy in the gym what I should or for criticisms on my technique. Took a little doing to get the "courage" to ask, but once you get over that hump you realize that the other dude is flattered because there is a reason you asked for advice in the first place. That reason is because you want to get where he's at

Back to basketball, at the playground there is always The Court. It'll be apparent which court is The Court when you get there. Typically, the further away from The Court you are, the lower the player level. Once you start getting improving, you'll know when you're ready to move to the next court, and so on.
