I have to say first that this guy was on my short list for the Knicks if they had a chance to draft him. You can’t teach height, and he has seemingly improved his game. However I had only seen him play a minimal number of times and never an entire game. Not today, though. Saw the whole game, and then saw the first half again.

After watching him against Pitt I have come to believe that we may have a chance for this guy, because if the teams ahead of us have any scouts worth their salt, they are not going to advise their team to take Thabeet. Needless to say that I would not want him on my team based on watching the entire game and concentrating on him the entire time.

Yes, I know that this was only one game, but it was a statement game for the guy after Blair manhandled him the last time they played, and it was a big game for seeding purposes. This was a chance for him to carry his team to a victory on foreign soil in front of rabid Pitt fans. It was a time for him to play with intensity and fire. Unfortunately he failed. Maybe he was sick or injured- I don’t know. I do know that he seemed totally clueless at times and played with a lack of intensity that stunned me.

Yeah, he outscored and outrebounded Blair, and had 5 blocks, but he was invisible in the second half, andif he had really put any effort into the game at all he would have doubled these numbers. My observations:

1) Does the guy ever set a pick? Without the ball he seems to wander around in some kind of daze, rarely trying to set a pick. And forget about passing. He had trouble making simple passes from the post.

2) If he was on my team I would have taken him out of the game the 2nd or 3rd time I saw him trot down the floor in transition. It did not seem as if he really cared about getting back on D (I saw one “burst” of speed to get back on transition the entire game.), and, as an announcer noted, he did the same thing on a UConn fast break at one point. I was stunned by his indifference at getting down the court. He makes Eddied Curry seem like a sprinter in comparison.

3) He let a number of people get to the basket without making any effort to block their shot. If he is in the area and he can raise his hands he may block a shot, but he is slow to react, and if he is not standing under the basket, he will probably not block your shot.

4) He is slow, slow, slow! He moves in slow motion.

5) Very limited offensive game. Shooting form is not terrible on the J, but he did not make a single jumper as far as I remember. He has some sort of hook shot/layup move, but the release point is low, and I am not sure he can get it off against guys his size. He also has to be on a certain part of the floor to make the shot- it has none of the versatility of a sky-hook.

6) He has a well cut body (Actually reminds me of a young D. Howard).but seems to have little strength. The guy looks to have a mature physique, but gets pushed around easily, and seemingly does not have the strength to fight for position. Of course he has no clue about boxing out and its relationship to rebounding, and this may be why he gets pushed around so easily. When he does box out he seems to put his body in position, but doesn’t realize he might actually have to exert himself to remain in position. By this point in his college career this should not be a problem!

7) I don’t know how many rebounds got through his hands or how many times he was pushed under the basket and was unable to go up for the ball with authorithy.

8. Please read number 2 again, very very carefully. Does the guy actually know how to run up the floor?? I have read numerous reports him being able to get down the floor and establish position. Did not see anything resembling this in today’s game. Is he lazy or lame?

9) Guy has no fire in him. The only time he got angry was when Blair pulled him down with his legs. I wanted to see something like determination or anger in his face, but his demeanor rarely changed, and you never sensed that he could take control of the game and dominate. The announcers said Jim Calhoun says he has a regal way of carrying himself, but I want a gladiator fighting for his life, not someone who carries himself like royalty. BB is a game played in the pits, not a ballroom floor.

10) The guy has zero BB instincts from what I can see. He is 22 (??) now. Does anyone really think that he is going to develop instincts at this point. He has the instincts of a kid pulled off the volleyball team to play BB.

I really wanted to see him rise to the occasion in this game, and I was rooting for UConn and Thabeet (I wanted to see him send a message to Blair and Pitt), but he did not seem to care at times. There is something missing in this kids game, and it is called heart. Add to that some sub-par BB skills and a BB IQ comparable to some of the repeater kids I have to teach in HS, and you have a major project in terms of development.

This is not the guy for us, even if he is available.

The way I read your post--it wouldnt have mattered if Hasheem doubled his totals in the second half.
I'll just say I think you are wrong and there is no chance that he'll pass by pick 3. And the team that gets him will be happy they did.

he gets pushed around when he's defending his man. He gets pushed off the boards quite a bit as well. His offensive game is being tall and throw the ball at the basket. Being 7'2 with long arms and shooting from point blank produces good FG% but he's got no offensive game.

He will go top 4-5 for sure, but mostly because this draft is terrible

He played passively today because they emphasized to him to stay out of FT. I feel bad he had a shtty second half--no excuse there but that doesnt discount what he did in the first half. he is playing with a slight shoulder separation as well. OH yeah Blair 8 points 8 rebounds 4-9 forgot about that. And guess what Blair is stronger than 98% of current NBA players.

I have seen him dominate defensively. UConn has a good defensive team and they do a good job pushing the penetrators to the help defense. Its a lot like the kind of defense Houston and Sprewell used to play when Ewing was healthy. They would get up on guys and give up the dribble penetration but only to one side. Then they would push their man towards where Ewing or Camby was able to help. UConn does a great job at that and Thabeet cleans up there much like Ok4 used to.

The NBA is a whole new ball game. Thabeet's low BB IQ and limited offensive game could translate to be a rich man's Steven Hunter.

He will deserve to be picked high, but he's waaay far from a lock as good NBA player.

He's a good character guy and a hard worker which are positives.

Is anyone bashing Thabeet watching the Knicks tonight and like 90% of this season? Please just take your hands off the typewriter. If anyone who likes basketball cant see what inserting Hasheem into the starting C position would do for this team then you have no credibility.

That is a valid argument because I feel the same way. I think there are many posters on here who don't even watch the games. Some have admitted as such and yet they can tell you what is missing or who doesn't fit without hesitation.

your right... watching him get pushed around by a guy thats 6'7 and works out alot is what did it for me. Maybe he's the next cant miss Marcus Williams?

Am I bashing Thabeet?

Can he pass? Dribble? Can he catch the ball? Does he get pushed around in the post by anyone with size? Can he guard other bigs? Does he have any footwork at all?

Why dont you tell me what inserting Thabeet would do? Maybe I am watching the wrong UConn games? Because everytime I tune in he looks like a guy that plays well in a system and has a boat load of weaknesses that are covered by that system.

The fact that there are only 2-3 guys I would take before him shows how weak this draft is (much like last years)

since I am the only one talking here is that me? What did I say that you disagree with? I hit the gym 5-6 nights a week and watch college BB there. I dont care about any of the teams so I watch for prospects. Obviously Duke, UConn and NC are all the time so I have seen alot of those players.

Thabeet is 22 (so they say) and after 3 years at UConn still lacks fundamental BB skills. But he's going to add 20 wins to the Knicks? Of course he's an upgrade to anything we have when your starting JJ at center and playing a PF there most of the minutes (who doesnt help on defense at all).

Let me see Uconn is leading the nation in FG% defense and is 27-3 despite losing a lead guard that is averaging 14-4-3. Its all Craig Austrie! Blair scored 8 points today because he had a runny nose.

any why would a great defensive player have to be passive to stay out of FT?

No Fish that wasn't directed at you or anyone in specific. Just an observation that I noted and Briggs made a similar remark. I am shocked when I hear someone use that to explain a counter argument. ^^^ thats fair because a lot of people do that.

Briggs is one of my favorite posters because he throws interesting names out there and gets me watching games I wouldnt otherwise. I often disagree with him and his assesment but I enjoy his ramblings.

I dont comment on guys I havent seen. Thats why I never had an opinion on Gallo after we drafted him. I never saw the guy play.

With as big a weakness as our five spot is, a Dalembert type defender wouldn't be that bad. We have enough scoring, we're aiming for Lebron so we don't need more offense. And assuming you can get a Lebron or Wade type player, we could get away with a weak PG (resigned Duhon).

No offense -- but thank god you aren't making draft decisions for the Knicks.

Thabeet is the only thing professional about that rag-tag UConn squad. The kid is exactly what the Knicks need and is barely scratching the surface. Did you happen to watch our stellar band of Knick characters get walked all over by the Bobcats -- did you notice D-Lee getting manhandled by anyone who wanted a piece of him.

Guys that don't see what Thabeet could bring to the Knicks make we wonder - what the heck are they watching?

Hasheem's last 11 games - 2 games he was in FT + played 23 minutes or less.

16. 3 points 13.1 rebounds 5.7 Blocks shots

The guy who started this posts is basing his opinion one game--really one half. One game where Hasheem did have 14 points 6 rebounds and 4 blocks in the first half which kept Uconn in the game. He configured a whole essay on why a scout should not take Thabeet based on basically the second half of one game. That he should not be picked through the first 15 picks or so if Im reading it right--that the scout would be insane to rec him.

A player who had no heart no skill simply COULD not put up those numbers--they couldnt do it--find me just one who could. The guy has his flaws but the BOTTOM line is the guy is an IMPACT player and with his growth from year 1 to year 3 in CBB that tells me there is a LOT more room for growth as he enters the NBA. Again this is not Andrew Bynum who can score 40 points--this is a Mutumbo-like player who will be able to get you 14-16 points in his prime rebounds 13-14 balls and block 4+ shots. What F team wouldnt want that? I think people break this players cahones and have trouble evaluating him simply because there is NO ONE like him. He is ALL of 7-3 and for the people calling him Dalmebart--well he is 4 inches taller than Sam but I think he will be a more efficient scorer than Sam. If I read this guy above him right--he is saying an NBA scout who was picking 5through possibly 13 or farther out would be CRAZY to recommend to draft Hasheem. Thats absurd and i think that a huge majority of people would disagree with you. but I do think this is the Knick mentality of the last 8 years---their scouting dept has been right and all other teams have been wrong-- we would be blessed to have an intimidator in the lane whether someone from the F NY Knicks thought so or not--lets face it--they are wrong and have been wrong for 9 years.
We picked the wrong GM in terms of age the wrong coach in terms of where we are and what direction we want to go in and we already had stooges in the scouting dept. Go look at the track record of JohnGabriel--absolutely brutal. A blind monkey with darts couldve done a better job.

They want to play uptempo and I guarantee we will draft someone slow and non athletic because he can shoot.

They shouldve hired Tom Thibodeau like most of the fans wanted and brought in a young GM. This guy is going to quit and leave us with has been from the Raptors and the Magic and a narcissistic coach who frankly has done nothing outside of Phoenix with the Nuggets or the Knicks.

Forget it Briggs, these guys want their bigs playing out past the 3 point line.

Not true - I would die to have a stud in the post who could score down low, knock down the midrange J and distribute. I don't like the fact that the Knicks don't have any player like this. I grew up watching Reed battle Alcindor, Wilt, Thurmond, Russell, etc.- I don't want a center hanging around the 3 pt. line.

If the Knicks can choose between Monroe and Thabeet I would not hesitate to take Monroe, who is not too strong at this point, but has skills Thabeet will never develop. By the way, B Lopez is also quite slow, but the instincts he shows and his anticipation make up for much of his lack of quickness. Lopez can also pass and has a more varied game around the basket.

And if Thabeet does/did have the shoulder injury, I can't say it was that evident in this game, and it has nothing to do with him hustling down the floor.

I know that I am using this one game for this rant! I am not looking at his numbers, but the type of game he played/plays... HOW he plays the game. He plays like an underdeveloped freshman, not a 3rd year player on a major college team with the body of a 25 year old man.

My biggest issue was his heart and a lack of competitive fire in a game that his team needed him to step up in. I will always remember when, during Ewing's freshman year, Georgetown played Virginia. I watched to see the matchup of the young Ewing vs the freakishly athletic and older Sampson. There was one point in the game where Sampson had an emphatic dunk over Ewing. On the next play Ewing, who was raw offensively, got the ball down low, made his pivot, and dunked over Sampson. I think Virginia won the game, and am pretty sure that Sampson outplayed Ewing, but that sequence always stuck in my mind, because in that one play, Ewing sent a message to Sampson that although he was a freshman, he was still someone to be reckoned with.

Thabeet had a chance to show something today and he failed big time- he was issued a challenge in the last Pitt game, but failed to meet the challenge in this game, and in my eyes, should drop considerable in the draft (Although I expect that some team will take him in the top 6.)
