Let's help Jasmina

Chris Wilcox has a new friend named Jasmina. She just turned 6 years old today (same age as my son, Zach) and aside from being adorable, she has leukemia. She has a rare and agressive form of it, which was diagnosed on Jan. 20. Her doctors say she needs a bone marrow transplant now or Jasmina will die.

Chris met Jasmina last week, when he visited her in the hospital with a Build-A-Bear. She has her own website, oneforjasmina.com, which I encourage you all to visit.

“I have a sister who suffers from Lupus so, unfortunately, she is in and out of the hospital and has undergone chemotherapy,” he said. “I just can’t bear to see a six year old who literally could die if we don’t find her a match soon."

What Jasmina desperately needs is a bone marrow donor. The issue is, Jasmina was adopted so she does not have any full siblings, which would provide the needed perfect match. Dr. William L. Carroll, Jasmina's doctor at NYU Medical Center, said the situation is even more of a challenge because, “African-Americans are under-represented in the donor base thus finding the perfect match even harder.”

"It’s not an organ that she needs, it is blood cells," Wilcox said. "It could be any one of us that could save her life."

Literally.

To help Jasmina's cause and, hopefully, find that perfect donor she so desperately needs, Wilcox is promoting a Bone Marrow Donor Drive that will be run by DKMS Americas this Saturday (March 7) between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at PS 41 on 116 West 11th Street in Manhattan. Fixers, especially those of you who are African-American, please take time out of your day and possibly save another human life.

If you can't make it there please go to Jasmina's website and get more information on how you can go through the very simple - and absolutely painless - procedure to find out if you would be a perfect match for Jasmina. Or maybe someone else like her.

According to DKMS Americas, the donation process is also far more simple than you think: "There are two ways to donate," the organization explains. "Seventy-to-eighty percent of the time, stem cells are collected from the donors’ blood, similar to donating plasma. Twenty-to-thirty percent of the time bone marrow is withdrawn from the hip (not spine) using a special syringe. It is an out-patient procedure done with local or general anesthesia."

To find out more information, go to the DKMS Americas website here.

Wilcox joins with other NBA stars, such as Paul Pierce and Tyson Chandler, and singer Rhianna, who have taken up Jasmina's cause.

Great Expectations

Bip - I would not say that Wilcox has played like crap.

The frontcourt is crowded and the roles are still vague as people are being moved around

Personally, I'd like to see Wilcox and Lee together on a shiftline with

Chandler, Hughes and Duhon

I was just messing with you. He really hasn't gotten enough time to shine or suck or anything inbetween. With the constant 3 guard rotations it's difficult for him to get time.

Funny thing Bip, you can see Walsh making chess moves to set up future moves.

I just hope he and D'Antoni can maintain a productive and respectful relationship for another 2 years

That cooperation is not always easy at 2 Penn Plaza

Especially with one of the biggest enablers in the league at the top of that mountain.

That's been one of our biggest problems for years. I personally don't think we've had dumb guys in the front office. I think Isiah had a huge ego and that got in his way. I think Layden was utah patient and that got in his way. But the biggest problem with NY, even going back to the Van Gundy and Riley days is that our GM/Coach are never on the same page. We aren't talking disagreements on a player here and there, we are talking about overall strategy and philosophy. Oh and as K22 mentioned, that Dolan thing is always hanging over every GM/Coaches head.

This situation is different. I think these guys have a good idea of what they want to do. They placed themselves in the ring for Lebron and Wade and Paul(the year after) which they had to do. They also seem to positioning themselves for the future if things don't work out as hoped. Who knows if they will be successful. But you can definitely see movement in a positive direction. Walsh knows what he is doing and has really set himself up for future moves.

Forward

Excellent points. I am even willing to grant (and fully expect) Walsh/D'Antoni the inevitable misses on draft picks or trades, just so long as they keep gradually moving forward with creative solutions.

The NBA will look very different in 2 years. If 11 teams needed an infusion of cash I'm not encouraged by the prospects of another lockout when the CBA comes up for review.

Executives will need one eye on the mood of players willing to move, and the other eye on the declining revenue streams. Corporate sponsorship, broadcast rights, merchandise (which is one reason Krypto-Nate is so valuable) will change along with ticket prices.

As The Garden undergoes its own physical renovation, how will management determine the cash value for the new amenities?

One thing is certain

It won't be dull

Yeah, a lot of us make the mistake of thinking if things aren't happening right now then they aren't working. But two years is a looooooong time. A lot can change with the players, with the economy, with the NBA. I like that we are in position to make a move at the big names but we know things can change on a dime. All the big names can sign tomorrow. Or come 2010, noone is looking to spend money and the Knicks have the pick of the litter. Either way, I like the position and direction we are going. We actually have some marketable players for the first time in years.

If you know anyone who purchased a house last Summer you can understand what the NBA execs may be facing as the economy behaves in unpredictable ways.

The Knicks, Lakers and Celtics as three of the most highly valued NBA franchises, could find themselves in a revenue-sharing position if things continue to slide.

The salary, cap as we know it, could cease to exist

I think it's more likely, than not.
