Does it seem like the Knicks keep trying to find another Larry Johnson type player? Michael Wright, Weatherspoon, and now Sweetney.....

I guess Larry was unique.

Yeah and to top it off They gave Keith Van Horn his number.

Seems like the Knicks always want to give new players someone else's number (which I can't stand!) and it always goes bad for us...

They gave Starks' #3 to Dennis Scott. He didn't last a year here.

Gave Mason's #14 to Chris Dudley. Nuff said.

Gave Oakley's #34 to McDyess. Look what happened.

Now #2 is being worn by Van Horn. Stay tuned for a repeat of the same bum luck.
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

This was really my point. LJ was great, but unique. He was variously described as 6-5, 6-6 or 6-7.

The Knicks seem to keep selecting guys that have LJ's body type, but they don't seem to be able to deliver like LJ.

LJ started off as a SF. For the knicks we needed him to play PF...
LJ was unique, an amazing NBA player. Too bad his career got cut short by injury. Huge heart, great defender, great leader.

Most of all, LJ was no chump. Not for Alonzo, Bill Walton, the NY media, NYK management, NOBODY.

He was just straight-up HARDCORE. On and off the court. We need more players like that, not less. We have no real vocal leaders on this team.
Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

Also, Larry was a major draft pick, and was a star player before coming to NYC. We actually picked him up after his media hype sheen wore off.

They are trying to turn water into wine with guys like Spoon (always a journeyman, never ever a player worth a full MLE, blargh!) and Sweetney. Johnson had Barkley-like media hype on him. You can't pick guys who were not stars in college and expect to turn them into stars in the NBA. That's a stupid M.O. for a pro org to have. Sometimes, decent but unexciting college players improve their game in the NBA and become valuable pieces for a team, like Malik Rose, but LJ was bigtime before his back gave out, not some "solid" college player.

I think they made a mistake with Michael Wright... they needed to develop the guy, not draft and dump him.

FWIW:

Michael Wright
Signed as a draft pick on 10/1/01
Waived by the Knicks on 10/25/01

He appears to have gone on to play in the Euroleague (in Poland)

Well I say we keep Sweetney and trade Spoon ASAP. Damn... We gotta trade Eisley and maybe Othella while we are at it...

How it's done is up to Scott LayDown, since he got us into that mess in the first place.

D&R has it right comparing Sweets to Malik Rose. That's the best we can hope for out of Sweetney. He's never going to be anything like LJ.

Doesn't have his athleticism (pre back), doesn't have his shooting touch. Part of what made LJ effective even after he got hurt is he'd experienced being a dominant player, knew how to win and had great self confidence. Like a pitcher who loses his heater and learns how to get guys out with junk and location. LJ never would have been even the player he was at the end of his career if he hadn't tasted the success he had early on.

Sweets is never gonna dominate people with his athleticism. Hopefully, he'll outhustle them and scrap his way into being an effective NBA player.
