For some time now I've been hoping the Knicks acquire Tracy McGrady because of his contract. My suggestion is McGrady and Alston for Nate, Jared Jefferies, and either (1) Marbury or (2) Q. Rich and Malik Rose.

(1) http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ar9mau
(2) http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=cxsd6h

Houston might bite because Nate is currently better than McGrady and doing either of these trades saves them a lot of money next season. When you take into account the penalty for being over the cap, the actual money the Rockets saved could be as much as twice the bellow listed “Money saved for Rockets” figure. With this move the Rockets could maybe even get under the salary cap next year. The Rockets would also make more money on selling Nate Robinson jerseys than they currently can selling McGrady jerseys because Nate is probably at the height of his popularity and most people who would consider purchasing a Houston T Mac jersey probably already have one. The Knicks would do this to free up money for 2010, get a legit shooting guard, acquire a local legend in Rafer to supplement Duhon.

Player 09/10 10/11
T Mac 23,239,561 0
Rafer 5,250,000 0

Nate 2,911,077 0
Jefferies 6,466,600 6,883,400
Marbury 0 0
Q Rich 9,352,500 0
M. Rose 0 0

Under trade scenario 1:
09/10 10/11
Contracts Knicks acquire 28,489,561 0
Contracts Rockets acquire 9,377,677 6,883,400
*Money saved for Rockets 19,111,884 -6,883,400

Under trade scenario 2:
09/10 10/11
Contracts Knicks acquire 28,489,561 0
Contracts Rockets acquire 18,730,177 6,883,400
*Money saved for Rockets 9,759,384 -6,883,400

(*Note: money saved assumes none of the players are re-signed)

we should look into mike miller i think. He's struggling in minnesota, expires in 2010, and would be a great fit for us to start at the 2. I bet we could do something like malik for him straight up...

Why on earth would I trade for more shooters, when players are lighting our asses up for 50 and 60 points at will. Any trade proposals should include some kinda shot blocker or pg..

because we aren't going to win with Q rich and jeffries playing big minutes. we could still use a real shooter to play the 3. also mike miller is probably as good a defender as jeffries, who many consider one of our best defender.

This trade proposal is all about 2010, and not about improving personnel. Its a good one, because McGrady has had a really rough couple of years and the pitchforks are out in houston. They want his ass gone.

Only thing is that they are in win now mode, so I dont know how much of an emphasis they would put on expirings.

McGrady announced he is going to get surgery and will be out for the season. Houston's coach, Rick Adelman, was apparently pissed off because he found this out in the paper. Here is an idea to keep in mind for the offseason:

McGrady and a second round draft pick
for
Eddy Curry
Jerome James' expiring contract
Nate Robinson in a sign and trade
trade exception if needed

The math still works and now Adelman is pissed

McGrady is having micro fracture surgery. He also has a bad back. He is not an asset at this point. Micro fracture surgery usually takes a year to recover from and can be career ending.

Unless they take Eddy we have no incentive to do the trade. TMac might just go back down again and I never liked his game anyway. He's not a team guy.

Eddy Curry and Mobley would be fine on my end but they will want SOME form of compensation for taking on Eddy and giving up Tmac and his "talent". So I'm guess we'd see let's say Chandler go out to make it work? Maybe Nate? Or maybe even David Lee? That is what we're looking at to entice the Rockets in any way. To be honest given how Nate and Lee shouldn't be retained and how badly we want Jeffries and Curry gone?

Curry, Jeffries, Lee or Chandler, Nate or Chandler
Curry, Mobley, (Chandler or Lee or Nate)

Are distinct possibilities...and are good offers for the Rockets. They won't keep TMac and it makes no sense for them to attempt and S&T next year. So we bail them out by giving them some talent in return and they bail us out by getting Curry off our cap.

Everything starts with Curry otherwise we can't meet salary (well, we could with say Hughes but we're not trading for TMac to play, we're trading for his 2010) and there is no reason for us to do a deal with them.

Just bc this bugged me:

"Eddy Curry, plus for T-Mac is a deal that was first speculated by Ric Bucher, who admitted it on the Brandon Tierney Show around draft time. And we applaud him for putting on his thinking cap, although, at the time, Curry didn’t have trade value. I believe Curry does now and will continue to show it. Something like Curry, Chandler and Mobley for McGrady and David Anderson"

Hahn wrote about that this morning. I'd post it, but Newsday wants to charge me.

We've been talking about this deal forever on here, it stands out like a sore thumb when you look for a place to put Curry's contract.

If it took Curry, Mobley and Chandler to get that done... I'm a huge Chandler believer, but you'd have to do that.

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Allow me, good sir.

The Houston Rockets are in no rush to get seven-time all-star Tracy McGrady back on the court, which is telling for a blue-collar team that is grinding it out right now for coach Rick Adelman.

There's actually nothing more to tell. The Rockets believe they're better off without him. Adelman has the Rockets competing at an admirable level every night even without Yao Ming (out for the season with an ankle injury). More importantly, Adelman finally has the locker room under control with Ron Artest off to the Lakers and McGrady, who subscribes to the Allen Iverson theory on practice, mostly persona non grata among the players while he recovers from a knee injury. And the Rockets want to keep it that way.

Enter the Knicks. They weren't prepared to deal with the baggage that Iverson brings with him, but as Donnie Walsh continues to search for ways to upgrade this season's team - which might barely eclipse 20 wins as currently constituted - catering to McGrady's diva-esque personality might be a lesser evil.

Multiple sources say the Knicks - who are owned by Cablevision, which also owns Newsday - have tried since the summer to engage the Rockets in trade talks for McGrady but have been unsuccessful. However, an opportunity could present itself after the latest episode - a reported spat with Adelman about McGrady's return schedule - that reportedly even has infuriated Rockets owner Leslie Alexander, who used to be one of McGrady's staunchest supporters.

What would it take? The Rockets would love to get a high-end young player for McGrady and also save some money, which suggests they also would look for an expiring contract or two. It will take more than one to make up McGrady's league-high $23.2-million salary this season.

The Knicks could offer Eddy Curry, who could make up for the loss of Yao and has only one more year left on his contract after this season; add an expiring contract such as Chris Duhon, Al Harrington or Larry Hughes, and toss in someone such as Wilson Chandler as a sweetener.

The Knicks might have to consider using the contract of retired guard Cuttino Mobley, however, if they really want to pique the interest of Alexander and general manager Daryl Morey.

Mobley is on the books for $9.5 million this season, but 80 percent is being paid by insurance because of his medical retirement. The NBA in the coming weeks will review and officially declare Mobley retired for medical reasons after the one-year anniversary of the discovery of the increased severity of his heart condition.

The Knicks planned to waive Mobley, which would wipe his salary off the cap. For the Rockets, who are a few million over the luxury-tax threshold, this could be a valuable savings. Alexander has never hesitated to spend for a playoff team, but it might be asking this group - as gritty as it is - to be among the top eight in April.

In Mike D'Antoni's system, the 6-8 McGrady could play as a big point guard. Like Iverson, he would come with a separate set of rules, but unlike Iverson, McGrady rarely is a problem off the court. Most of all, he would be a free agent next summer, and at 30 years old, he's on a mission to get another long-term deal.

The main concern, of course, is that he's healthy enough to be effective.

If this deal is there, you just have to do it. I don't want to read next Summer that this deal was there but we wanted to keep the Mobley contract savings and our young players.

If the plan is 2010, then go scorched earth and do whatever you have to in order to move Jeffries and Curry.

Get Utah to throw in something on the deal because if we did that it sets us up for about a 10 win season.
