His system is about team play. It is about execution and about outplaying opponent with smarts and energy.
But if his team faces the team with superstar or 2 he is helpless.
Superstars are breaking the logic and math of the game and making the game an art and unpredictable performance.
He has no idea how to compensate it. He will need to figure it out to get to the top one day. He is not ready yet.
Some superstar(s) on his team will help… But he will need to prove that he knows how to use it. This will be interesting..

that's why it's best for his star to be a facilitator like nash. i agree. what's he gonna do when lebron goes lebron? that's part of why i think he may be fired for a defensive coach after a year or two of bron or wade or whatever.

I think the ironic thing is that a Lebron will get D'Antoni fired in that first season if he arrives.
I don't like to play bad rookies , I like to play good rookies - Mike D'Antoni

Mike has 3 year contract. So looks like very good timing to make a decision like this.
I think he and Walsh were both avare that it will be very clear after 2010-2011 season what was accomplished and what to do next.
Smart people are planning their work very well in advance.

What about Walsh? I think it is 3.
With one year left thay can kick him out easily.

stars are the problem for a lot of coaches because the NBA does the game an injustice by catering to these guys with the way they call the game.... Kobe, lebron, and wade are good enough, they don't need the refs giving them chippies.. It really takes a lot away from the game if you ask me.. those guys don't need help!!

I don't believe having a star will be a problem in D'Antoni's system. It will just make his system more efficient.

Look at how many times Al Harrington tries to do his own thing. Now Imagine if that was Lebron James instead.

Amare & Nash weren't superstar players? Nash was the best PG in the game playing under Mike D & Amare was 1 of the top bigmen in the league.

You miss the point - it is not about stars on Mikes team, it's about opponent...

D'antoni isn't trying to stop a superstar....he's trying to win basketball games....126-117 and the stars score 61 and 31? I think he did a good job of keeping his team in the game. Nobody could have contained Kobe tonight...

Knicks are wining and staying compeditive with a bunch of nobodies. Give D'antoni his props.

I agree with you Eny.

Some people forget that D'A was ass't coach of the US Olympic team which had all the superstars on it and played the stars from other countries. Not only did we win the Gold, but all of our players liked playing the uptempo style. And even coach K of Duke who had been very defensive oriented wanted to adopt some of D'Antoni's style for Duke (who happen to be ranked #1 now).
