NBA turns down Knicks
By MARC BERMAN

INDIANAPOLIS - Knicks president Donnie Walsh said at the morning shootaround here that the Knicks got denied yesterday for the $4.5 million disabled exception for Cuttino Mobley. That's a big blow, as Walsh could have used a slice of it in a trade now or this summer. Walsh said he was not going to sign a player with it this season, but they could have broken it up and signed two this summer. Or signed one and traded the portion that was left. There was a lot of flexibility.

Walsh won't waive Mobley yet. He'll see if Mobley's contract can be included in a trade by the Feb. 19th deadline. Again, Walsh is in no rush to sign a player or open up a roster spot, which is bad news for Stephon Marbury. So no Patrick Ewing Jr. just yet.

The league ruled Mobley's injury occurred before the trade - his hypertrophic cardiomyopathy ailment. Perhaps, but the Knicks get penalized for diagnosing the career-ending ailment and potentially saving Mobley's life. Bad call by the NBA. The Knicks should have gotten the exception on the spirit of the rule.

Phuk ew NBA!

Like it has been stated before, the NBA likes to make things as difficult as possible for the Knicks.Just look at the past history!!

This is total nonsense...I seriously think they have something against NY....watch the next time something like this happens and they give the disabled exemption right away.

this is ridiculous. the knicks basically saved mobley's life and they get penalized for it.

i agree with berman, which doesn't happen often.

i dont think the NBA makes things hard on the Knicks, but I do think they go out of their way to make it look like they aren't favoring the Knicks over other teams. Which basically amounts to the same thing, I guess.

This is pretty amazing. Crzydups you said it best: "the knicks basically saved mobley's life and they get penalized for it".

This is like following the law to a "T" but first cutting out your heart to make it that way.

Hopefully we can still trade his contract as Walsh is looking into.

This is just hard to believe. His condition got worse and he needed further tests so Walsh went through with the trade. There should be some severance to the basketball team, not just the $$ saved to the corporation (insurance will pick it up).

On a positive note we got rid of Zach's salary, but now this is hurting us. We are trying to make the playoffs and could use the extra body.

He was injured before the trade and the Knicks made the trade agreeing to take both the player and the injury. I don't expect the league to violate its rules help the Knicks out here.

technically, they are right to rule the way they did.

But what if we turned back Mobely to the clips, found a substitute.

He would still be playing for the paper clips, and would very much be at risk for death.

they should have made some kind of exemption.

to be fair, i was paraphrasing berman. i don't know if that will ever happen again.

I think I'm going to be sick...

Well, sometimes Berman does get things right I guess.

Wasn't there a discussion on whether his medical situation was known beforehand and that there could have been a motive to do the trade to get relief from the league. Or if there was negligence on our side?

I'm just asking because I recall you had a lengthy discussion on what our GM could have been thinking before the trade was made and after.

Excuse me it was you and Oohah. I see the thread was bumped below this one but I think Isles had some input on it too.

I don't remember, but I thought it was a good trade on every level.

It rid of us Zach. I thought with Cat we'd stay equally competitive, and if we didn't I was cool with us bettering out lottery position. An exception would have been a nice bonus, but my feelings for the trade don't hinge on it.

Ah, the old "they're doing Cat dirty" debate. I miss oohah, he's fun.
