The Knicks put out that heavily edited "highlight" reel of Gallinari practicing and now they deem him fit to dress for games. After the crack medical committee allowed him to play in the first 2 games, before deciding that he should sit out the next 2 1/2 months, it would be beyond incompetence, bordering on medical malfeasance, to let him back at this point unless he was 100% healthy. If this organization is more worried about perceptions than doing the right thing with this lottery pick then they're as much of a joke as they were when Isiah was running things.

So now that we can officially put his back injury in the past tense, it's time for him to start showing why he was worth drafting with the 6th pick, ahead of a number of players who many think would have been a better pick. I'll understand if he's rusty and I'll understand rookie mistakes and needing time to adjust to the NBA game. But if he looks totally clueless and out of his league, I won't be happy.

Let the judging of Il Bustino begin.

You wont be happy? I forgot the fortunes of the Knicks revolve around your thoughts.

But seriously, you don't call a 20 year old kid a bust when he has barely played thus far due to injury. Even if does play every game the rest of the way and not do to much, he's not a bust. He's a 20 year old foreign rookie who is coming back from a major injury. A guy can be characterized as a bust after playing the same exact way for 2-3 seasons, i.e Darko Milicic. Gallinari is nowhere near Darko bust status yet. He needs way more time than half a season to show what he's got.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

there's a buncha '08 rooks u could call a bust if u wanted to judge them based on half a season of play... we gotta wait to see how these kids develop over a couple seasons before we can start throwing that label around.

One thing Isles is right about. If he is now healthy enough to go, what is he doing sharing the pine with Jerome James? I hope MDA is not pulling some Darko **** and we only get to see this guy in garbage time. He isn't a late lottery pick or late 1st round pick. The kid said he is ready to go to Gus and is the sixth pick. Like Isles said we all expect rust and rookie mistakes but the learning experience must begin at some point. If you are rebuilding then you are rebuilding. This ain't the 03-04 Pistons competing for a championship here. What's the deal?

On the bust label, it seems like it is used subjectively. Conley is considered a bust after 1 season and a half by many. Noah is picking up the bust label as well. Darko picked up the bust label in his first season by the Detroit press. We will never know if he isn't given the opportunity. People got on Isiah for not giving Chandler an opportunity last season, how does MDA get a pass. Gallinari could easily get some of Jeffries or Q's minutes. Those guys should not be in any rebuilding plans.

Maybe he's very gradually healing but he wouldn't be in pain if he was healthy. Maybe he's "healthy enough" to play but you can't know that from a highlight video.

Danilo isnt really fully healthy according to himself....he decided he would play with some pain and try to work thru it.
From Alan Hahn.
http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/basketball/knicks/blog/2009/01/gallos_a_go.html

Galinari doesn't look healthy in this photo. His back is all crooked. I hope he is in better health than this picture from the Alan Hahn article shows.

The article also bring out that Galinari was lifting weights - advised by the Knicks trainers. That could definitely tighten up the muscles and throw the back out. IMO, too much heavy weight lifting by many pro athletes has led to a lot of injuries.

We are near the half way point of the season. You cant expect Gallo to come in and take JJ2 or Q's minutes right away when he's still in pre-season form while the rest of the league has had half season conditioning. MDA can gradually give him minutes all the while he's busting it in practice to get his wind and form. I would say by March, he should be ready to play consistent extended minutes.

I am not sure what to expect. I remember Mourning held out and missed the preseason but came in right away after signing and had a big impact immediately. Gallo boosters are quick to point out how tough the competition is in Italy and how he is as tested or more tested then the other players taken in the first round. I think if he is ready to play he should. Look what Bayless did with minutes with Blake out. Gallo was taken with the sixth pick in what might be the most talented draft in the history of the draft. If he is as experienced as touted, and is healthy, he should start getting minutes immediately.

If Gallinari is healthy, he should be playing. I have no problem with MikeD weening him in, but by the end of this year he should be playing big minutes, since this year doesn't matter.

I wanted Bayless and the kid is proving he's a good player since getting the playing time....

Gallo is here and he's shown signs so I just gotta hope he can come in and show the same type of results.

but ah man.....Bayless would have been so awesome right now!

We introduced him to weightlifting coming from an athletic culture that doesn't encourage too much of it. This is the reason why his back hasn't healed properly according to the NY Post. So he's unlike any other 19yr old prospect he has to literally be treated with Kid Gloves.
