I would consider this to be a learning year for a good young team that is not ready to challenge the big boys. Lots of youth and inexperience, and as some have pointed out, a 20 year old Oden just coming back from a serious injury.
They need a better PG, obviously. Blake is competent, but I see him as a Duhon in some ways- a competent player who will man the fort until their future PG, whoever it may be, arrives. I do wonder if the Portland brass really thought Bayless was the answer when they drafted him. I remember arguing with Portland posters about whether or not he would be a starting PG for Portland. People either thought he would a point, or figured that Roy could do many of the things a PG does. It is obvious, at this time anyway, that Portland does not think Bayless or Rodriguez is their future PG in waiting.
If Oden comes around and does not become the Sam Bowe of his era, I don't see why this group won't become an elite team in a few years, even if they can't get anyone better than Blake. Outlaw, Fernandez, Batum, Bayless, Webster. and Rodriquez are all 24 or younger, and will get better and either contribute to the Blazers or be used for trades.
Do people really believe that a group of young players can come together and immediately develop the chemistry to be an elite team without some growing pains and maturation as a team? If they were to keep this same group for 5 years, almost every significant player on the team will still be under 30.
The Blazers are not "overrated-" some people are just overreacting to the normal growth curve of a young and talented team.
