Just curious, how did we come up short trading up for Mayo? Minnesota wound up trading him to Memphis for the 5th pick Kevin Love in an 8 player trade:

Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker, and Greg Buckner - To Memphis
Mike Miller, Brian Cardinal, and Jason Collins - to Minnesota

Could we have beaten this deal?

Walsh seemed more interested in Westbrook than Mayo, although I think Mayo was definitely on the radar. I think the proposed Lee trade would have netted us Mayo (possibly). But that deal fell apart allegedly after Lee's agent said that Lee would not resign with Memphis. I think if we really wanted Mayo, we could have gotten him. He is playing better than most people expected right now. People knew he would be good, but most figured it would take a year or two for him to get there. He is almost an allstar now and has only been playing for 2 months. I really liked him and wished we could have gotten him or Westbrook.

People here couldn't get over Ariza for along time (and still can't). People couldn't get over Houston's failed attempts to come back and be the star we paid him to be. People here have a hard time getting over certain players that don't amount to much. And people here won't let it go about players 'we could have had, if only we traded Lee scenarios'. Yeah right!

I'm a member of this club also. I can't get over the fact that we passed on Bynum and Lopez. At least my rants are legit. I even wanted Kobe and Lebron in NY. Hey' when I go for something, I think big!
I'll never trust this' team again.

Sorry guys, I guess I got to the party late. It was an honest question. Hopefully, Galinari will make us all forget about a 6'-5" physical guard who can play either backcourt position, has a complete game offensively, is able to shoot from deep or power to the basket and finish, and will take on all challenges at the defensive end.

If we make the Lee trade with Memphis prior to the draft, Minnesota takes Love at 3, because he was the guy they wanted, and we get the guard that Seattle/OK City does not take (Mayo or Westbrook), and probably Gallinari as well. So we give up Lee and end up with Mayo/Westbrook and Gallinari.

Memphis must have thought that OK City had Mayo #1 on their board and Westbrook #2, so they made the deal with Minnesota to guarantee that they would get Mayo.

On the draft night show one of the ESPN reporters reported that "the Knicks have found their point guard." I assume that she was talking about Westbrook, and her statement would indicate (unless the Knicks had another motive for making the PG statement) that the Knicks thought he would be on the board when they picked at 6, so if Westbrook and Gallinari were around at 6 we probably would have taken Westbrook. The Knicks must have thought that OK City would be taking Mayo, Gordon, or even Bayless, but not Westbrook.

Rose and Beasley were locks (whatever the order) at 1&2, Minny (McHale) was in love with Love, OK City wanted Mayo or Westbrook, and Memphis, after the Knicks trade fell through, wanted Mayo. I am not sure what we could have done to trade up for Mayo, since OK City AND Memphis were interested in him.

Saying we could have gotten Mayo is one thing, actually making a deal to get him is another thing.

If we wanted Mayo we could have gotten him. We had the 6th pick in the draft. A deal of Lee and the 6th pick to Minny for the 3rd pick and filler would have gotten it done. Minny wanted Love but Lee is a known quantity, who at that time had as much perceived upside as Love or at least close enough, that Minny would have taken the chance Love would be gone by the 6th pick. In fact, a trade of Nate or Chandler with the 6th pick might have been enough. When the Memphis deal fell through Walsh decided to stand pat and hope that Westbrook fell to us. It did not happen.

Depends on how much McHale was infatuated with Love (looks strange when written). Do we actually know that Walsh did not talk to Minny? Given Love's struggles, perhaps McHale wishes he now had made such a trade with the Knicks for Lee.

I wanted Gallo at 6, but Mayo was one of the guys I would have taken over him.

The biggest 2008 draft question is why they wasted their lottery pick on Il Bustino. I want to know D'Antoni's involvement in making that pick.

especially when La Scrubella Bayless was on the board... inexcusable.

He should get his boy Fraschilla to demonstrate the process for him. I seem to remember he likes to show off his balls.

Team would have been completely different with OJ and no Lee.

Wonder if we still would have been able to showcase and trade craw/zbo.

Would OJ be too out of control in this offense?

Hard to play what if.

Have to think Westbrook would have been nice though. No question. So would McGee.

Maybe we got the worst of the top ten.

Couldn't we have let Isiah make one more pick? Is that too much to ask?
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)
