He sucks. He lost his potential and explosiveness with his surgery.

Amare is one of the posterboys for selfish me-first players in this league.

He developed a jumpshot when he came back.

Would sure like DLee to shoot like that.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

The more I think about it the less I want Amare on our team. Unless it's for a whole lot less than a 5 year max deal allowing us to pair him with other star players.... You know, Bosh-Amare-Lebron type deal. Yet that's a REAL pipe dream. If Amare wants 5 years 125M dollars - eh - f'em. 5 Years 60M? Okay, maybe now you're talking....

if we ended up w/Joe Johnson & Amare in 2010 & no Lebron or Bosh i wouldn't consider it a failure by any stretch.

Not a failure, but, not a championship success I would say. Can't have it all but I don't know if I'd spend everything on those guys and say to myself, "well, 2nd round of the playoffs for five years running is more fun than no playoffs..." Ya know? We've been there and done that throughout the 90s. I definitely don't want to lock up a consolation prize for eternity. If it came to that I'd rather wait and see what comes around the following summer.

i wouldn't mind holding out for 2011 either... say if we signed Joe Johnson in 2010 & then picked up Yao the following season... regardless there's so many options we have & there's no telling how our draft pick this year will turn out... or maybe a trade option opens up in a couple years because we have the cap space to swing it... no one knows what'll happen at this point but at least we can legitimately talk about these things now whereas we could only dream about it before.

Yep, and the start of it is 18 months away. It's about time this franchise had options. I can't remember the last time it did. It's a good thing. Arguing over which FA stars to sign.

Yeah, there's this thing called mileage that's caught up with Amare. He's not the same player not even close. You don't go looking to blow a max contract on that guy. NO WAY. Joe Johnson is a good player but he's also not a max player. NO WAY. And when we have the cap space? These two and players like them will want the max. I wouldn't sign either one to more than 5 years and ~60M dollars. Dwight Howard or Chris Paul are the players you throw max dollars at. Amare and Joe Johnson are players you try to lowball and hope it works. You blow your cash on those two and yeah, you're looking at the 2nd round exits time and again. Waiting for Garnett to call it quits so you move up by default. No thanks.

I guess what I am trying to say is this:

We are going to have cap space. That means everyone that we are interested in will say "Hey they have cap space!" and will want huge contracts. I don't believe we do ourselves any favors locking up second tier talent into 1st tier player contracts.... so if we miss out on LeBron, Wade, Bosh --- I don't think we should do what the post-jordan-bulls did - and just run around trying to give away our money - which for them resulted in Jalen Rose being vastly overpaid to suck.

That's all I'm saying. It's not 2010 or bust. We've simply thrown our hat into the ring. If Joe Johnson and Amare are the two we get? Fine, yet, just don't bust the "max contract" nuts on them, THATS what I'm alluding to. Albeit poorly.

Now, if you can get JJ and Amare for 60% or so max? Allowing you to try to sign Paul or Howard to the max in 2011? Well, NOW we're talking!

I just don't want our team to blow all it's money on 2nd tier "max" talent. For then? It's 2nd round and out for the next five years, which would be a heck of a lot more fun than this 28-win-average we've had over the past 5 years, but, it's still a ceiling.

I don't want my team to lock itself into a ceiling you know? And...if you overpay for JJ and Amare just because MikeD likes them - you're locking yourself into a known ceiling. There's no "well maybe they grow and win a title one day!" because you already know what you got and it's surely not a championship roster.

I'd rather sign NO ONE before I commit big dollars to second tier talent. Yes, Amare and JJ ARE second tier talent.
