Colangelo was the sexy named mentioned a couple yrs in the New York media circle and Dumars has practically been teflon. These GM's are experiencing major adversity and you can look at really 1 move they both made which is hurting them tremendously. It's interesting how fickle the GM position can be how one day you're the talk of the town and then the next moment you're prone and subject to the same blunders as the incompetent ones.

Dumars' mistake not drafting Melo

Colangelo's mistake drafting Bargs

In Dumars case of course he managed to have great success but it's caught up to him now. BC wow the Andrea pick continues to be an atrocious selection.

How about this mistake:

The Suns selected Rondo in the first round of the 2006 NBA draft. But they decided not to invest in a guaranteed contract in him after D'Antoni said he didn't believe Rondo could play immediately because of his shaky outside shot.

lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

True but in the case of the former their mistake is drafting. I tend to think GM's must get drafting right more than anything else they do.

i sorta think the opposite only because prospects are all such a crapshoot... proven NBA players u can sign or trade for give u a much more definite outcome in terms of production, so i give those less of a margin for error.

Rondo definitely could have been a player for the Suns along with Nate, Lee, Deng, Biendrins, Ellis, Iggy, Josh Smith, Al Jefferson, Kevin Martin. As you stated our coach was there the whole time and had major input into their decisions and trades. Although I don't think not having Rondo truly affects where they can transition their team meanwhile not having say Melo or Brandon Roy does for the former.

You have to get drafting correct. I believe there's less influence as to why a GM should or shouldn't go after a player. Cap/Ownership/Coach have greater influence how a GM goes about acquiring talent via trades.

Dumars other mistake, trading Billups for Iverson. In one move he turned around two franchises and now George Karl looks like a good coach.

They already had Nash and I think they might have still had Marcus Banks. I can see D's reasoning much better than Isiah's taking Balk.

Dumars is doing fine, he knew all along the Iverson deal might back fire this season, but he made it with the future in mind.

Colangelo, not so well.

Better that Isiah anyway.

Every GM makes mistakes. It's impossible to be perfect. Unfortunately when you make a mistake it can stick with you for a while. This doesn't make you a bad GM it just makes you a human. The key to being a good GM is recovering from your mistake and not making the same mistake over and over again.

Dumars dumped salary and has to rebuild.

I like when GM's go backwards knowingly to plan ahead then just react.

Toronto with o'neil is not working out. SOmetimes ownership demands a "win now" mode to bring in some cash.

Regarding Rondo, The kid is fast but lets get one thing clear, he needed a few years to prove himself and ownership did not want to invest in a contract. That I understand. With Nash and Barbosa its very reasonable. Also, Rondo gets a lot of looks playing with THREE HOF Players on the court. Rondo is OK, but on another team he might not fair nearly as well.
