Interested to hear intelligent thought on this one...
I understand baseball is America’s game, and it was started in NYC’s backyard in Hoboken. But to me NY is and always will be a hoops town, especially when the Knicks are playing well.

When the Knicks are good, is this a hoops town?
Can someone please defend the rack?

I think NY is a hoops town period. It's "our" game, imo. I think Baseball I think Chicago. I think Hockey I think Detroit, although some Canadians would probably argue with me. Football I think of Dallas or Green Bay.

hey tommy,

I think its undisputed that the Yankees and Mets have way more fans and fan interest in NYC then the Knicks and Nets do.

F baseball, its the most boring sport there is. Once we are GREAT the city will turn right back into a hoops town.

thanks fellas-

My thing is that the mets and yanks are split so when the yanks are buzzing you have a few million people pissed.

The knicks, when good, have a full fan base.

I just think it's a total sports town but the knicks have the most total support...plus the history with the teams of the 70s etc.
Can someone please defend the rack?

baseball isn't even a sport, its more of just a game isn't it? if you can be out of shape and come to games hung over and still dominate like babe Ruth did is that really a sport or more of a game based off of pure skill?

I agree. Baseball is the least athletic "sport" out there.

NYC is not a baseball town. This will upset yankee fans but Boston is 10x the Baseball town NYC is. Thats no knock on NYC.

Hoops Baby, yeah!

i disagree with alot of y'all.

baseball is the best sport b/c there's alot of strategy involved. every single pitch matters. and hitting a baseball is the toughest thing to do in professional sports.

with that said, baseball is talked about year round in this town. offseason gets as much press as the season itself.

people only pay attention to the knicks when they're in the playoffs. they are the appetizer to the main meal. they only get sole attention from fans in january/february and that's if the giants/jets aren't in the playoffs/superbowl.

this forum is a terrible place to ask this question b/c it's full of bball nuts.

baseball #1
football + nba is tied based on how the teams do

basketball's quality as a sport has really taken a dip downwards over the past 5-10 years. and it's popularity has taken a dip in ny and around the country. just look at the ratings.

Thats kind of unfair. Maybe if you're DH'ing, but just because its the least athletic sport doesnt mean that it doesnt take a strong athlete to play the game in all facets.

As far as inebriation goes, I always play ball at least slightly intoxicated. Taking a couple of shots before games loosens me up. Im more relaxed, inventive, creative, and aggressive.

We're definitely a hoop town though. The Knicks defined the city when they were ballin' in the '90s. Literally nothing else mattered.

Chess has a lot of strategy too. Every move matters.

Baseball is chess for dummies.

For real though, how many bball courts in NYC?

Now how many baseball fields?

that's purely based on real estate. plus, you only need 2 people to play basketball.

with that said, baseball still rains supreme in this city. it supported 3 teams within a 5 mile radium for a long time. knicks are the only game in town. and they still don't come close in terms of fans. you have 8 million people split between the yanks and mets. knicks probably don't even have 3 million fans. how many fans are just turned off by the sport itself? the whole palace hills situation and the quality of play has lost alot of fans.

I don't think that many ppl can agree with me, but i definately don't view baseball as a "real" sport like bball, soccer, hockey, football, freakin javelin throwing or whatever else. Chess is prolly the one game that requires the most strategy. Does it make it a sport? Hardly. Hitting a baseball is the toughest thing in profesional sports? Harder than landing off of uneven bars? Harder than running a marathon? hehe, is it harder than hitting a golfball? Even if, for arguement's sake, its harder to hit a golfball or hit a bulls eye with a dart it doesn't make golf or dart throwing a sport.

Let's see , you sit on a bench waiting for your turn at bat( slightly intoxicated or not, it really don't matter), then you pick up your bat, go spit , grab your crotch or someone's ass a few times and take 3 swings, then go back sitting on the bench? Sry that don't sound like a sport to me, definately sounds more like a game that requires skill and not much athletic ability at all.

I agree with ramtour.

While baseball does involve tons of strategy for all that's positive you have just as many negatives if not more. Take for instance Baseball is the only sport in which if your team gives up a 5-6run first inning you pretty much feel a game is over, especially if the team that's up has great pitching. So as a fan you sit there in torture if for the duration of 9innings knowing you team's chances is slim to none of coming back. It's the only sport(maybe one other exception golf) in which fans tremendously can affect the outcome of a game or at least a play. It's the only sport from game-to-game depending on who's umpiring changes the dynamics of the game at the plate(expanding or shrinking strike zones) and won't use instant replay for obvious misjudged calls. The Designated Hitter is a complete joke of a position and 1 league utilizes this while the other doesn't. It's the only sport in which ball parks(once again the only exception is golf maybe) greatly affect how the game is played. Purposely built these days to increase long ball opportunities. It's the only sport in which you can intentionally hurt someone and get away with it or a warning. It's the only sport in which a team can intentionally give up potential scoring opportunities to gamble on the outs(by putting runners on base) instead of having what it takes to get each batter out regardless of mistakes made or not. This is really a joke because if fans pay say in Boston avg ticket price $50seat I believe to see David Ortiz(who's designated to bat all night) but get's walked every time he comes to the plate because of his hitting fear is a joke.

I could go on and on how ridiculous of a sport baseball is.

Baseball is declining. It used to be #1. But the youth are restless. Baseball is the game of our grandfathers. The best athletes in highsvhool play basketball and football.

and not for nothing, watching a guy fail 7 out of 10 timees and calling him a hall of famer isn't my idea of entertainment. might as well watch jared jeffries shoot free throws.
