We just bought Al Harrington rather low, and his stock has sky rocketed.
Great move! But I wouldn't be shattered if Walsh turned around and flipped this
into an even better prize by the trade deadline.

I'd prefer he not but DW did trade him twice before so it's not out of the question.

If the right trade comes along and Al has to be traded, you sadly have to let that happen because we aren't playing for the present that much. Say we get a high pick in the trade, or a serious prospect or two, you may have to pull the trigger.

But I think Walsh is seeking trades for the guys that may not affect the present product, like Curry, Jeffries, Rose etc.

i think you look to trade al harrington at the trade deadline NEXT year for a draft pick if we're not looking to keep him in the fold long-term. any playoff team that needs a little scoring punch would love to get that guy.

I disagree a bit- I think we need to be more competitive in 2009/10 than this season as we'll be forfeiting our draft pick & having to recruit free agents.

Harrington might be part of the 2010 supporting cast that gets a Lebron & second & third fiddles...

The 2010 pick is still in play depending of our success this season. If we make the playoffs and move to the semifinals, the 2010 pick is ours and we lose this year's.

Now, that said, we need to be as good as we can next season because of the FA factor.

DW needs to be carefull here. He is also trying to make this an attractive place for FAs. You trade for Harrington, who is his guy and loves being here and is playing his ass off because he loves being here your going to look slimey.

Yes its a business but we need to win and if anything is obvious its that this core of guys likes playing here and playing together. We cant bring back Al, Lee, Duhon and Nate. But we can bring back 3 of them if lose Curry and possibly JJ

The pick is top 20 or 21 protected for 2009. Unless we were a top 9 or 10 NBA team this season the 09 pick remains ours and Utah gets an unprotected 2010 1st rounder.

cryz--don't you think there is even a reasonable chance he may opt out THIS year? I don't get how some of you guys think. If you have a big year in pro sports and you have the ability to become a UFA--the agent will always do it. If the Knicks want Harrington longer term --thery're going to have to pay him.

at this point I would rather trade the pick with JJ and use the money to resign Nate (Lee is getting done regardless).

Use cash for 2nd rounders

I guess that is always the worry about any good player. Can't fret too much. There is also the point that Al wants to play in NY and also that most FA's stay with their home team.

Right. But in basketball free agency is a little different because you can usually predict how many teams can pay you more than what you are getting paid and then you make your decision on how many potential buyers are in the market. So while in one offseason (e.g. 2010) it would be a no-brainer to opt out, in another (e.g. 2009), it might not be as good of a plan. Look at Ron Artest, he's constantly been underpaid because his contracts keep ending in bad free agent summers. Sure, it doesn't help that he's a looney tune, but still -- timing is everything in NBA free agency (ask Rashard Lewis).

Can't trade it outright. We must use it or swap it like in the Curry deal because you can't trade picks in consecutive years.

The next pick the Knicks can trade is their 2012 first rounder.

i think Donnie's definitely gonna trade D Lee at the trade deadline... Harrington & Chandler are more versatile & have more refined offensive games & i think Walsh envisions both of those guys here for the rest of the season.
