Well its not really a surprise- but its shotblocking. Just some numbers for you:

-We are last in the league, averaging 1.9 blocks per game. The team that is next to last is averaging 3.6 blocks a game. We are 1.7 blocks off the next worst team in the league!

-The average team in the league is averaging 5 blocks a game, we are 3 blocks off that average

-The top team in the league averages 7 blocks a game- we're 5 blocks off that average.

-We are last in block differential, at -3.5 per game.

Any way you slice it, we are ridiculously bad across the board on shotblocking. While shotblocking doesn't automatically equal effective defense, it would certainly help a defense that is yielding an opposing FG% of 47.8%.

IMO, its the fact that there is not a single player to build around/lack of franchise player.

That is certainly the case- my intention was just to point out what was the biggest weakness in our play this year in terms of results.

Did the Pistons have a "franchise" player?

If the system works, you can still win.

lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

Lakers should have won that year if not for the shaq/kobe drama.

And you might be able to argue that Billips is a franchise player, given where detroit is since the AI trade.

Right, I don't think that our weakness is a lack of 'franchise' player. As the Pistons have proven, you don't need one to win a 'chip.

And I'll agree that shotblocking is our biggest weakness, by far.

On the shotblocking note, it is interesting to me that Bosh doesn't block shots..at all. That's something to think about when talking about 2010.

I'm pretty sure it is defense.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

No, they didn't have a franchise player. But they had 4 "go to" guys. The Knicks currently have 0.

Was the D'Antoni Suns a very good shot blocking team? The reason I ask is that I don't think a player that is suited to play in his system would not be a very good shot blocker. Most shot blockers are not very skilled offensive wise.

They were 2nd in the league in shotblocking last year. Don't forget that Marion was an impact shotblocker and Amare started blocking more shots last year. In addition they used to bring guys in the game like Stephen Hunter who could block shots.

Also, D'Antoni puts his best five out there, rather than stick filler like a JJ in at the five.

If D'Antoni had a Camby, I am sure he would play.

Clearly, if we could add a shot blocking franchise center in this draft (Thabeet), we'd really be only one more piece away.

Knicks need Camby....there's no other shotblocking center out there that could possibly fit this running style.....or Noah from the Bulls.....other than that? Javale McGee but he's probably untouchable.

Thabeet is not a running player....he's Shrek.
