Will he? Or will they just clap a lot while seated?

I think they will stand for two reasons. First, he took them to an average of 58 wins and made them THE team to watch for the last half-decade. Possibly the best stretch of basketball they've ever had. Second, Kerr looks like an ******* now and the team is struggling; a shadow of its former self. Shaq is a fat ****.

D'antoni is a class act. I'd give him a standing O for what he's done here.

I still think the Suns were NBA champions without the ref cheating scandal and/or without the retarded and inconsistent suspension decision that one year.

But, yes, I think he will receive a warm reception.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

I think so, most people can appreciate a good thing when they see it. I doubt Phil Jackson would have gotten a lot more out of that team than Mike D'Antoni did. The team was designed for one purpose, run and gun and they did it well. Its not like he had a bunch of defensive stalwarts on his team. He made use of what he had and extracted the maximum mileage that he could. Standing O in my book.

Here's the thing, man.

Everyone says that this 'system doesn't work'. But chew on this: out of the 30 or so teams in the league, how many are running a system that compares to D'Antoni? 2? Including us? Everyone else is running more of a 'classical NBA system'.

It is not fair that this 'system' gets the 'can't-work' label because there are so few people using it. Everyone else is using the other system. If anything, the classic theory fails because out of those 26 teams running it, only one wins the championship. And out of the 2 running us, both of them have gotten damn close (dallas, Phoenix).

I think people assume it can't work, because most people unobjectively look at a running system and assume "no defense". But that, obviously, isn't necessarily true. D'Antoni's teams played well above average defense in Phoenix during his tenure there, yet most fans and writers reported how Phoenix would give up so many points. There were posts on this very board about how nobody on Phoenix "plays a lick of defense". Yet, when you looked at the defensive stats per possession, Phoenix was always in the upper eschelon when D'Antoni was there. One year, they were #1, I believe.

D'Antoni's Phoenix teams didn't advance further because of 2 things:

1) They weren't very good in the half court game which playoff games inevitably come down to.

2) They couldn't get a stop on defense if their lives depended on it, and of course it did.

ALthough these are legitimate points, I'm just going to point out 2 out of 4 of those playoff loses were to the eventual world champions, and one was to a red hot Dallas team who should have won the championship but choked. The last one was because Shaquille O Neill just didn't fit their system, even though he provided that half court game they so "badly" needed.

Give me D'Antoni's record in Phoenix over the next 4 years and I will be a happy man.

thats a product of size not system. The had guys like Marion and Diaw playing PF. They had shooting guards playing SF. Nash isnt a defensive player, never was. They have a PF playing center. They were always undersized against opposing frontcourts. You watching Knick games? He is shouting on defense all the time.

Those teams won more regular season games than other teams because of MDAs system. Do people here think the Suns were better than the Spurs or Lakers? Those were good teams, but not better than Duncan's Spurs and Shaq/Kobe's Lakers.

I would say that the Sun's reluctance to spend more than just around the salary cap also hindered their championship aspirations. How many draft picks did they sell? Nash could have used more than 1 legitimate backup. And they let Joe Johnson go too?

You know, one thing that has really made me more confident about Mike D is the fact that lately we've slowed the game down a little more and played a sort of half court game and have still been great finding open shots and flowing the offense.

Also, the Knicks may not be the best defensive team in the NBA but right now are playing solid defense, a miles better than the last seasons. I think that will improve as we get more guys able to defend their man.
