Just got word that Patrick Ewing Jr. has officially signed with the D-League. Players don't sign with specific teams, they sign with the league. What happens now is he must clear waivers (that will be Monday) and then it will be revealed what team he is "awarded" to.

The speculation is that Ewing Jr. will go to the Knicks' shared affiliate in Reno, where Jay Humphries is coaching and implementing Mike D'Antoni's system.

Ewing's signing comes on the same day the Knicks open a roster spot with Cuttino Mobley's retirement announcement, but I wouldn't look too deeply into any coincidence. As we've said here before, I believe the spot that could be for Ewing is the one Stephon Marbury is taking up at the current time.

But at least Ewing Jr. gets himself game experience and loads of time playing in the same system the Knicks are playing. Teams can sign players out of the D-League at any time, so the Knicks -- or any NBA team -- will be able to monitor his progress and make the move whenever they are ready.

We'll see how it goes. Hopefully we'll be able to free up spots and bring him back.
