I saw this on REAL GM and thought it was intersting, especially in regards to the Marbury situation.

Simple question. If the NBA didn't have guaranteed contracts, like the NFL would they have a better product? How would that effect FA, especially one big one in the near future.

Could the owners make more money, and still put the best product out there? Some times I think that once some players get their money, they never put up the seasons like the ones before they earned their big contract (Erick Dampier for example).

Just curious what you guys think. It sure would be nice to have the flexibility to be able to make a move to keep PLAYERS on the team. When the Cap is around 70 mil, an you have a huge chunk of that tied up in a player that really is a waste of space....

Some of the immediate effects:

Expiring deals would have much less value to a rebuilding team in trade.

Play would improve. I believe players would work harder to stay in the league. The eddy curry's would still eat their way out of the league, however.

Thoughts?

I can't see the players ever giving up guaranteed contracts. Especially when you see football players getting cut weeks after signing contracts (Oakland).

Both bargaining agreements are flawed, but at least in the NBA there's some integrity to the salary structure. What I mean is that its a players league where owners and GM's are held accountable for their decisions.

The NFL is almost foolproof for the owners and GM's. Screw up, simply cut the player and if you're successful you in essence have to give up most of your good players so as not to violate the hard cap. Teams just rotate spots.

Problem with the NBA is that its TOO hard to rid yourself of roster problems. Stuff like the %15 rule, e.g is making things difficult for fans of dumb ass franchises like the knicks because were stuck with our errors.

Most important, the NFL treats its players like cattle. Regardless of what you think about athlete's pay scales they are the ones that drive the leagues and they shouldn't be completely expendable and at the whims of greedy owners.

But its true that there are many, MANY players taking advantage of this structure. Look at guys like Jerome James. I can't believe a guy like that is a millionaire for doing nothing. He wows in a stupid playoff series, waits for a long contract and sits his *** earning millions. I would love for a way to make this sorry man to earn the money, but there isn't. And he won't retire. HE IS A FREAKING JOKE I can't stand him.

The NFL cap is the way to go. This will protect the owners from themselves. How about a hybrid of the NFL CBA. Why don't they just guarantee the 1st 2 years of the contract and have the signing bonus not count against the cap?

Thats Isiah's dumbass fault for investing in a loser. Rather have that, then some overprivileged, cigar-smoking, aristocrat chewing athletes up and spitting them out. Trust, athletes are making the kind of money they make, because they generate billions. Its not charity and just think what the owners are making.
