Popovich: Spurs Are Horrible Defensively
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich can't believe how badly his team has played on defense at the start of the 2008-09 season.

"If we don't play good defense, it doesn't matter if we score or not," said Popovich. "We're not going to score 110 points a game, so we have to keep people in the 80s or low 90s for wins. That's how we've done it every year."

San Antonio, which is 1-4 for the first time in Popovich's 11-plus seasons, is allowing opponents to score 105.5 points per game.

"Even if Manu [Ginobili] and Tony [Parker] were healthy, we can't continue to play the defense we have been," Tim Duncan said. "We're going to try to get back to the old Spurs ways, where we keep the games in the 80s."

i've seen 2 knicks games this year (last one being 2 weeks ago). so here's how i see the knicks season so far in terms of my theory on guard play in the nba:

redd > knicks backcourt : loss to mil
felton + jrich = knicks backcourt : coin flip win to cha
daniels + young + stevenson < knicks backcourt : win @ was
? + brewer < knicks backcourt : win vs. utah

was minus arenas.
uta minus deron.
sas minus parker.

without those guys, those teams have some of the worst backcourts in the league.

knicks win tonight.

it will be pretty depressing if we lose tonight. because as i said in the mayo thread, i think memphis will whip us good. i agree with the guard thing.

i wonder if malik gets some run tonight trying to slow down Tim D with his patented "pull out the chair" move that Duncan still seems to fall for at least once every time Knicks play the Spurs.

Play good defense. Duncan is their only scorer right now but they do have others who can step up if not defensed properly. Knicks have a habit of letting scrubs from other teams have a career game against them. I'll go with the Knicks. Knicks 97 Spurs 91.

if the spurs loose this game itll be real bad for them... i see them giving their biggest effort of the season tonight so the knicks have to be ready for an all out war. coach pop has been blasting them in the press along with duncan

Knicks can't allow those young guys explode. They have a point guard on the Spurs that's pretty good off the dribble and has a little spunk.

If the Knicks win it will be a wow game that will put a nice little light on our team for a hot second........if they lose this one its just gonna be a "see I told you they suck" moment.

I be ok with a Knicks loss if someone gives Bowen a squared off punch to the face. A solid closed fist right to the nose. I want to see Z-Bo give Duncan a knee to the groin too.

Spurs blow ass. They blew ass with Parker. They will blow more ass without him. They will struggle to score 80 tonight in a blow out.

So why aren't they doubling Duncan before he gets the entry pass in the post? I never thought that D'Antoni knew how to really deal with Duncan no matter who he had guarding him while he coaching the Suns.

The energy's there but there's three things that need to improve or we can forget winning this game:

(1) Shot selection for Craw is ATROCIOUS even on his few makes so far

(2) Zach, get your ass in the paint and start posting up Duncan and getting better shots

(3) The unforced turnovers we've committed are some of the worst we've made all season
