Kenny Smith, one-half of Turner Network Television's basketball analyst team, was asked to name the best player on the New York Knicks. Without hesitation, Smith said point guard Stephon Marbury.Mid-chew, the other half of the analyst team, Charles Barkley, chimed in, saying that just because Marbury has the better skills doesn't necessarily make him the best player.
Barkley said his preference would be to play alongside not Marbury, but Duhon, whose professional resume consists of three ho-hum seasons with the Chicago Bulls. ``I won't say Duhon has more skills,'' said Barkley, a member of the hall of fame. ``But he's a better player.'' It's an important distinction, one that the Knicks -- and other professional sports teams -- are beginning to understand. You see, superstars such as LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers are blessed with superior skills, which can be developed, AND talent, which can't.
You either can or you can't.

I like the argument and yes there is a difference. Marbury is a better talent all the way but Duhon is the better player.

If Marbs ever "got it" he would be considered amongt the greats. He's still beter than any point guard you can name in his era......he's just lost on so many levels. Even Jordan was lost in his talent until he "got it" finally and started wining championships.

pretty simple. we all know marbury is the better talent, but as a player he lacks a lot.

Stephan is great street-ball player.
But he never was and will never be great NBA player.
Why? It is simple - he is retarded. And you cannot be NBA great if you are a complete moron.

i disagree w/Barkley... i think Steph is the more talented & the better player, he's just a royal PITA & all about himself... Duhon is the better TEAM player & the better fit for a TEAM system... i agree w/Barkley tho if i were a basketball player i'd probably wanna play alongside Duhon instead of Marbs just cuz of all the crap u gotta deal w/when Marbs is on your team.

I agree 100%. Let's look it this way, allen Iverson and Gilbert Arenes are similar players to Marbury. They are shooting point guards that shoot alot. Is Duhon a better player the Iverson,Arenes and Marbury? NO!

I coached in a PG heavy league. Everyteam had a PG that could break down anybody and everybody. Elite Division I guards couldn't stop half of these kids. A guy on my bench was the exact same way. He had so many skills it was amazing. He could do things with a ball that you aren't supposed to be able to do. He could shoot, he could do it all. My starter couldn't dribble between his legs and his crossover was questionable. Who do you think led his team to 3 titles and won the league MVP 3 straight years?????? Actually my center :) But the PG was our best player. He was dominant. If he was in a pick-up game he would be selected in the middle of the pack. But when you played with him, you just knew he was a winner. He made all the right choices, made all the big plays, picked his teammates up and frustrated the heck out of the supposed "superstars" on all the other teams. He should have been named league MVP but his lack of flash wouldn't allow it. But to this day, I still contend that he was the best player I ever coached.

Did that dazzling guy get PT? Or did you pull a D'Antoni on Marbury on him?

You caught that "guy on my bench"

I stole his joy big time. He never played D and pouted a lot. You can only watch a guy stand in one spot(while the rest of the team is rotating on D) for so long before you lose your gourd. After a week or two of this you have to turn your attention elsewhere to avoid pulling your hair out. The fans and some of the players think you are an idiot for not playing the guy, but they also don't study game film 8 hours a night. They don't see how devastating that one guy is to what you are trying to do. I tended not to care about what the fans said, and only cared about what I said.

Bip, if you stole his joy, now only did you lose your juice card, but you have also grown senile. You, my friend, are a dead man walking.

The end result with guys like this are often the same and remind me of EC. Which makes sense since he went straight from HS to the pros. You tell the kid what you expect. They do it for one day and then stop. Then when you don't start them they pout and say you either hate them or aren't communicating with them. These Curry quotes are almost word for word with what some of my worst offenders have said. You clearly state to them what they need to do to play. You also want them to, because you know how good they can be, and that helps you. But some just never get it. They honestly think they are trying hard and it's difficult to show them they aren't. They see themselves on film and they can understand. But when they get on the court they are so stuck in the HABIT of not playing hard that they can't change it. Many times they are the same way in other aspects of their lives. The guys that change are normally just struggling to figure out the "right way" in basketball. The rest of their lives they make the right choices. The figure it out in basketball because they can use the rest of their lives as an example and apply it to hoop.

Arkrud - I have to disagree about Marbury being a great streetball player.

Marbs has always been a bull and just massively athletic. Skip, Kenny Satterfield and others used to bust Stephs ass in the street. Booger the kid from Soul in the Hole used to give it to him and he was skinny as hell. Steph doesn't have flair to his game he's all muscle and always has been that way. If you did a move on him and scored, the next play he would drop his head down and bull his way to the basket or dish it if he was double teamed. How many times as a Knick did you see Marbs do that? How bout in Pre-season this year? He's 30-31? Time to grow up......even Kenny Smith and Mark Jackson figured the game out as they got in their 30's. Fuck man even the greatest streetball player of the 90's Skip to my lou Rafer Alston "got it".

Yo man that's Marbs legacy. Its a shame.
