Here is my scenario.

I have a slingbox and an extra DVR in my home office, and because I do internet work, I obviously have a fast Internet connection too. You connect a cable line and your Internet connection to the slingbox, and from any place ELSE on the internet (if you have the correct login/password, etc), I can open an application on my laptop or high end phone and tap into the slingbox which in turn taps into the cable (and the DVR in this situation). it's like being in the living room next to the TV, but you are doing it through the computer or phone.

Have parents or friends who live in NY and have a fast internet connection? Buy them a slingbox and you can watch their TV and get MSG etc.

Like that.

nothing... it's like having 2 TV's in the same home. Both people can watch without having to have the same channel on.

i think you confused his question.

let's say slingbox is on TV#1 in new york.

you connect to it from conn. on your computer. you now have full access to that tv. just like you were sitting in front of it. you can change the channel, use the DVR, just like you had the remote control in your hand.

but if someone in new york changes the channel on TV#1, you will see that on your PC. so usually, people put the slingbox on a tv that's not used or hook it up to a dedicated cable box that nobody uses.

it's the best invention of this century. i think slingbox solo is around $130 right now.

and if you have a PDA/smartphone with Palm or windows with an unlimited data plan, you can watch it on your phone. it's pretty amazing.

the pc software can be loaded on any pc (you can even download for free from their website). you just have to put in your unique slingbox id and your password and you're good to go. but only 1 person can connect to it at a time (that's what makes it legal). the only requirement is that you have broadband internet and a router at the place you install the slingbox and just broadband connection where you're going to view it.

you can also hook it up to any security cams in your house if you have any. (don't trust someone in your house?) don't even think twice about it. you can
rewind & pause if you have a dvr, and even watch VOD.

let me first say the Slingbox is the greatest new invention known to mankind right next to the DVR... if u don't have one, get one, trust me.

i got mine hooked up to my own HD DVR box in NY so i can watch it whenever i want... anyone w/access to your finder ID code can also watch it on their PC's too, so i can basically watch it anywhere i want as long as i have an internet connection & can download the Slingplayer software.

the new version of the Sling software even provides a TV viewing guide for your favorite channels next to your viewer which is awesome, & it also gives u a slider so u can backtrack to any point in the show you're currently watching just like in Windows Media Player, or u can track forward if you're watching a previously saved show... that does away w/having to press rewind or FF on your Sling remote to get to where u wanna continue watching again, which is much easier & more convenient.

1 thing tho, while it's possible for u to watch the Slingbox on your computer while someone else watches the same channel on ur DVR at home at the same time, 2 people can't access the same Slingbox at the same time from remote locations, so 1 of you have to be logged off for the other to gain access.

on the HD, it's not really worth ur investment to get the HD cuz w/the picture u get on ur end you won't really be able to tell the difference so if u don't have one already just opt for the regular digital DVR box... i have my box hooked up to a highspeed Fios connection back home so unless u have a T1 connection or something i can't imagine the picture getting much better

I was going to wax lyrical about the glorious mangificence of the Slingbox. I was going to compose tearjerking prose in honor of the greatest of all gadgets known to man. I was going to fill Dostoyevsky-style tomes with testimony towards that which the good Lord has bestowed upon us with His creation. I would erect monuments to edify it awe-inspiring stopendousity.

Yet words fail me.

And the Lord saw the Slingbox, and it was good!

P.S. When you get it, buy the mobile download. Its pretty cheap, and theres nothing like watching a recording of House on your cellphone. Or the Knicks, I guess.
