Danilo Gallinari, the Italian rookie who was the sixth overall pick in the June draft, will participate in his first full practice tomorrow at the MSG Training Center. The team is off from practice today.

Although the organization believes Gallinari is ready to go and he has been cleared to play by the team's medical staff, Gallinari says he still is feeling pain in his lower back. He suffered a bulging disc over the summer, which has since receded.

"I have some pain; I have to live with it," Gallinari said before last night's 101-90 preseason loss to the Boston Celtics at Madison Square Garden. "The pain is staying the same; it's not getting much better."

Seems like he still has pain but the team is saying you gotta tough it up and play.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

this is not good, our team has the worst medical staff ever. Whatever happened to getting a player healthy before you shove him out on the court? Things will never ****ing change with this team!!!!!!!!!

if his back still hurts, why is he playing? For a young kid like this on a crappy team like this, there's no sense in toughing it up and playing.

They probably realize he wont get any better but he will have to learn how to play through some pain and then eventually will have to get surgery, it's just not necessary right this second.

He will have surgery after the season and clean up his disc.

Its no big deal if thats all it is, but if he has surgery now he is out two months.

The Knicks should have started treating his back as soon as he got hurt. Why did the Knicks wait for preseason to give him cortisone shots to help his recovery process. You would think they would have started the treatment ASAP to have him ready for the preseason. Anyways back pain can be funny the more you play the better it gets or the more you play the worse it gets.

Prop him up on Cort shots and Pain killers just to get him to play....... Just to show you didn't draft damaged goods.

What an organization!!!

back surgery? on a 19 yr old? that would NOT be good. the back just takes a while to heal. they shouldn't rush him...

also, the quote towards the end of the article where the team is now privately questioning his desire to play is baaaaaad news. the gallinari era doesn't seem to be off to a good start.

This is a big disconcerting since he he still says he has pain. I doubt the team is sending him out there injured, I don't think Walsh/D'Antoni would risk that, which means it sounds like Danilo has some toughening up to do.

I honestly don't believe that he's in need of surgery. This is just an assumption that back injury always leads to surgery. It doesn't. The article said that the disc has receded!

The pain he feels may be caused by the nerves have been irritated for a prolonged period of time. The initial cause of the pain may now be gone, but that doesn't mean the pain from the irritated nerves is all gone. Much like an area being tender after a surgery. The trauma to the area is still there even after the healing has begun.

Once again I do not believe that MDA and Walsh would put the guy out there if he still had a bulging disc with a risk of further injury. He's just got to tough it out and play thru this pain, which is gonna be there for a while. I'll reiterate that surgery is a last resort in these cases. His doesn't sound like a candidate for surgery at this time. If you look it up you'll see that they don't want to just start cutting away if the area has a chance to heal on it's own.

The disc has receded.. he probably went to see a chiropractor. They can perform miracles, if they are good. He's got to strengthen the muscles around the disc that bulged, drink lots of water to keep that sucker filled up (discs are mostly water) and he'll be fine. He's probably sore because the area is weak. Growing as much as he has.. will do that.

Maybe the nickname "roster" is too flattering. Maybe the name "chicken" is better suited.

Really, that's just a throw away line joke, but let us never forget Weis, who flat out told us he wasn't ready for the NBA.

If we went from "French Toast" to "Overcooked Linguini" I'll drown in a pool of tears.

Well the good thing is that Gallo is known for being a very tough and feisty guy. He never backs down from a challenge and I think he probably was hurting and played anyway, which is likely what really aggravated his disc injury.

He's had a lot of time off and if it was me i'd make him stay out some more, unless the doc's said it wasn't gonna get any better anytime soon. Amazingly enough part of healing the disc involves some exercise which will make the disc compress a bit, which in turn will send blood and oxygen to the disc to promote healing. So the guy has to put up with some pain that is healthy pain which would be part of his therapy.

I guess they refuse to send him to a chiropractor to fix him the right way without surgery or painkillers.

Same old MSG. We are never gonna be bad enough to get a #1 pick and we'll never be smart enough to make what we have work. We will suck forever.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

Just a quick note to those saying to get surgery, it IS NOT A POSSIBILITY. A bulging disk is NOT ruptured, there is nothing they can remove. To visualize it just imagine what would happen to a disk if you were holding an extra hundred pounds. It would just "bulge" out a bit.

That said, strengthening muscles needs to be done with care. Often it's constant muscle tension that actually can assist a bulge in bulging. (The muscle tension pulling across the disk section). Strengthening the muscles is important, but if you can imagine, allowing the tension in the muscles to relax is equally as important as the area needs to be in that "relaxed" state to really promote healing. At the same time the area needs movement.

Considering his age and how hard he has played ball for the last year, I am not really worried. He needed rest and got it. Now he needs to slowly come back. I haven't seen one person on any forum mention that back pain, bulging and ruptured disks, is caused by muscle tension (mind tension) but it is. (In addition to physical causes of course). I'm not a doctor but have researched this for years as well as experienced it.

Don't worry guys. If he takes care of his bodymind he will be ok. I've seen 10mm ruptured disks heal...

Couple of points:

They were saying the guy was still growing. That has to be factored in. The KID is only 19. As a kid growing up, did any of you guys experience growing pains? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this "injury" is associated to his body changing.

When I got to Junior high school age, I used to get some mean back spasms. They were so bad that it caused my spine to curve slightly. MRI's confirmed this along with a herniated disk. They went away after a year or so until they came back again in high school. Even now some 10 years after high school, I still feel swelling, or soreness in my back after doing some moderate activity.

Problems that we need to worry about? As long as Gallo isn't saying "I have a sharp pain shooting down my leg" or "numbness" he's gonna be fine.

Treatment? These mofo get pampered before and after games and practice. They will rub him down, and stretch him out. Heat, ice, electric stimulation......he'lll be good money.

Recommendation? Keep him from guarding one of the biggest mofos in league history......like shaq, and oh yeah, tractor traylor!!!......dude is 6'10" but he's also 205lbs......that's crack head skinny.
