There are ample reasons to dislike Stephon Marbury. He has generally been a petulant whiner most of his career, and he is nearly always doing something absurd or crazy.

But there are also many reasons to love him. (As you can see, I'm quite torn.) He gets giant numbers tattooed on his head -- which is just aesthetically pleasing -- and he sells his shoes for like $10. And then there's this fascinating nugget of cultural behavior: He went to a homeless shelter on the Bowery to watch the most recent Presidential Debate.

He kept his eyes on the tiny TV, laughing and scoffing along with the residents as McCain spoke-Marbury does a pretty good imitation of the senator-and smiling when it was Obama's turn. "Look at Obama," Marbury said, pointing at the screen. "You feel him. We feel him. You can feel his spirit when he speaks." At one point, when the debate turned to the economy, Marbury snorted. "Middle class? We don't have a middle class anymore." As the millionaire said those words, the homeless agreed. "I love Starbury," an excited resident said, referring to Marbury's affordable sneaker and clothing line. "I can get hot shoes for like $30. Jordan wants me to pay $100." Others gave him career advice. "Hey, you know, I see you doing good in the sixth-man role," one resident offered. "It's just a game," Marbury answered, pointing at the screen. "There's more to life."

Wow. I mean, I've been on record as calling Marbury crazy, but I'm genuinely touched by the coolness of this act.

Legally insane or not, how many millionaires will go to a homeless shelter and hang out to watch the debates? Granted, it's probably the best place to get a reasonable touch on the problematic pulse of America, but still, it's not something you will see happening every day.

Additionally, it has to be noted that Marbury is firmly on the comeback trail right now. (I think he's comeback material, right?) Nine points on three for three shooting with six assists for the point guard last night and word on the street is that Jamal Crawford is heading to the bench. So clearly Mike D'Antoni doesn't listen to the homeless.

I personally always try to separate the player from the personality. Unless you know guys personally you do not know what type of person they are. The media will demonize those they don't like and glorify the ones they do. Most players lie somewhere in between. I'm suspecting marbs is as selfish as they say in some respects and as generous in others. Either way, I don't know him so I just let it go. I just do my best to stay out of there personal lives.

Couple things I learned from being friends with players that are currently in the NBA. Many of them have publicists that shape their public personas and we really no nothing about them. One of the most loved players at my University was a smart guy, great speaker, outgoing, engaging in interviews, always quick to lend a helping hand. But in his private life he was honestly one of the worst people I have ever met in my life. He was loved statewide but was honestly a jerk. We really don't know these people.

Sweet gesture, but why do I get the feeling he'll be suing the shelter for lost revenue in a couple of years?

Let's be honest here. The only reason Marbury wants Obama is because he's black. Marbury has no intellectual level to even understand what Obama is saying.

They should do a study on pro atheletes like Marbury. He's not a bad person. He's just a douche bag. He has money and he plays a sport that allowed him to be on TV. His family is basketball royalty. He was crowned the next great point guard since he was 5. What can this all do to a human being that's not really wrapped too tight?

Well he does seem to be a changed man. I just wish he wouldn't comment about gossip stuff in the media. Tell the press "only basketball related questions please".....all the rest he can put in a tell all book after he retires.

any diss people have against Marbury are for what he does when it relates to the game of basketball... everyone knows he's 1 of the most charitable athletes in sports, & he gets mad props for it.

Good to see marbury has friends in low places.

Nice media event to rebuild his image.

This guy is not genuine. Im not saying he is a bad guy and does not do good things, but he is just not genuine about it. There is a difference.

This guy gets cred for selling inexpensive shoes like he is somehow a charity.

The only thing good is he made some homeless people feel good by having a celeb in the place. Thats nice.

Even if his publicist arranged it.

I don't think Steph's heart has ever been questioned by those who actually know him. It's his head that has the problems. Off the court, he's one of the most well intentioned people I've ever met. He's just selfish, misguided and overrated on a basketball court, having wasted potential Hall-of-Fame talent and possibly legally crazy off of it, which is unsurprising when you consider his upbringing.

To the poster who stated he's only voting for Obama because he's black and that he doesn't have the capacity to understand politics, Steph has actually been involved in local politics for awhile now, having rallied for NYC public school teachers, donating to local city educational funds and libraries and petitioning city council members on a few issues in his old neighborhood among other things.

From what I understand, he met two homeless men a couple of weeks ago, gave them some money and they invited him to the shelter. No media was invited, not even bitch ass Berman.

I havent a doubt in my mind that Steph suffers from some sort of mental illness. I guess the easiest armchair diagnosis would be a lower grade of bi-polar disorder. His actions are so consistently erratic and fiercely opposed to each other when you juxtapose them. Try reconciling his crying at that press conference and philanthropy efforts with his actions as a Knick. Like two completely different people. Plus his interviews have been increasingly bizarre over the past couple of years.

He could have been so great.

Marbury is a crackhead, plain and simple. His intellectual level is that of a toddler. It doesn't matter if he was white, black, chinese, or whatever. He is too stupid to know who is the best candidate.

No doubt. I hear stories and it runs across the gambit. MJ, Magic and Malone are classic examples. Seen as great guys by the public during their playing career but by their teammates and those around them are known as jerks. Jason Williams is another one. I recall when the news came out about the shooting and how shock some people were because of all the great press he received during his career and others (mostly ex-teammates) not really shocked by the news.

I cant wait for him to be homeless away from the knicks. I cant wait for this lifetime basketball loser to be off this team. How many playoff wins in his career?
I want to leave something that's going to stand for a long timeI want to leave a legacy,I want to leave tradition.I want to leave an imprint,a blueprint in terms of how people play, and how they coach and how they respond when they put on the Knick uni.

That is your projection. Anyone can "feel" and that is Marbury's words. Not that I know why he is voting, but how do you? I certainly can feel Obama's message and though the color thing is a part, do you really think any Black man would get the vote? You mention cause Obama is black, he is also the most literate and intelligent man to have run for president since Kennedy.

So, perhaps it doesn't take much intellect to feel what another is saying. So, I put this back to you "Can you feel what Obama is saying?" Or is it just an intellectual thing for you? If so, your missing a big part of the picture and message.

I am a white Obama supporter. My comment wasn't meant to be racist. The point was that Marbury is too stupid to root for anyone based on their ideas and would only vote for Obama based on race. Do you really think Marbury would be sitting there talking about the presidential election had there been 2 white folks running? He is a moron to the 10th power. He can't think for himself.

I CAN feel what Obama is saying and I understand what he's saying but I doubt Marbury's pea brain can even function properly enough to feel or understand anything.

Ok, I just had the wrong idea. I am a white "supporter" too (but prefer to just say "earthman" and really wasn't trying to make you out to be racist, really. I've seen Marbury in interviews and see he really isn't the "cerebral" type, to put it nicely. But, still, Obama's message has to resonate with those who can feel cause, unless I'm off here, he is the real deal. (Hope he gets a chance to help Unite this country).

I think a lot of people are going to vote with feeling for Obama. Cause unfortunately since around WWII this country has been dummed down and people can't and won't become involved. It seems that the least among us have been leading. But changes are here and more coming.

For Marbury, being a star might be like a big self fulfilling prophecy regarding ego. Know what I mean?

By the way, what you doing up so late, I'm in Europe, it's just morning here...
