I dont think anyone expected Gallinari to play heavy minutes this year anyway, and with his back and the other adjustments he is going to have to make, spot minutes until he earns it is all there is going to be.

Lee, Randolph, Chandler, JJ2, Gallo will all split minutes between the 5/4/3.

I think so. He's a better fit starting than Lee, next to Randolph, b/c of defense and he can block a shot now and then.

I don't expect Curry to be getting ANY playing time, b/c his defense this pre season has been AWFUL. We always knocked Amare's defense, but he tried and was aggresive and blocked shots and gave hard fouls. Curry backs away from people driving, never blocks shots, and when he fouls, they are sissy little love taps, as well as his offensive fouls. I betcha he opts out, just so he ends his misery of being on the Knicks bench.

When he makes it back healthy and starts showing some of that talent in practice - MDA will get him in there somehow, even if it means Chandler getting some time at the 2 or the 4. MDA found out for certain the last two nights that he can get away with Chandler at the 4 and not give up too much of anything. As for the 2 spot, I don't think Chandler's quick enough or has a good enough handle for that position, but against some teams, they could probably get away with it. Man, I know this is a Gallinari topic but I tell ya, Chandler's got a chance to be a real good one...

I agree with you. Chandler can play the 2,3 and 4. Gallanari can probably play the those position too. With Crawford not able to play in the D'Antoni system because he is simply a one on one player. It doesn't look like he will contribute much this season maybe 5 minutes off the bench or he gets traded. Q-Rich isn't very good and is a hit or miss type player who doesn't bring consistency. The way I see it, it would be great to see crawford and Q gone. I can see Gallo playing sf and Chandler sg. That would be the ideal siuation.

A future starting lineup of:
Duhon pg
Chandler sg
Gallo sf
Zach pf
Lee c

This lineup wouldn't be so bad because Gallo and Chandler are interchangeable so is Zach and Lee.

Donnie Walsh did. He said so on draft night. "He will be a big part of the rotation." referring to the 08-09 season.

Why should Chandler play the sg position when he is the better option at sf. I don't get this need to justify a bad pick. I feel terrible for Chandler because the guy is now being asked to do things to try and justify the egos of the front office. Gallinari was drafted as a PF according to Walsh not a SF when asked. They discovered he has a bad back and more than likely can't handle post duties. A better question is why shouldn't Gallinari play the sg spot?

Thats why I said they are interchangeable. I know Gallo can play the sg spot he has a very good handle. I can see on the defensive end Chandler maybe better able to guard a sg and Gallo better on the sf.

Feel bad for Chandler? I'm sure he's feeling great after scoring 22 andpulling down 10 rebounds last night. He and Nate are clearly the MVP's of the preseaon. D'Antoni has him playing a role similar to Marion, hybrid 4/3. It worked for Marion and I'm sure it can work for Chandler.

Gallo hasn't played a game yet and you already know that its a bad pick. How about we let him play some games first.

Why? Because Chandler's proved to be versatile enough to possibly play some SG w/o giving up too much on either side of the ball, that's why. The kid's got a chance to be a real special 2-way player and D'Antoni knows it. And the whole idea is to try to get Gallo out there, no matter what combination it takes. Why do you feel bad for Chandler if he has to slide over and play some 2 at times? If it worked (trust me MDA, after carefully experimenting with it first somewhere along the way, wouldn't go to it if the match up wasn't favorable), it'll be good for the team by allowing D'Antoni to probably put his best unit out there at any given moment - that's all it should be about - the team. That's not gonna always work, not against team's with smaller 2s, but against bigger off-guards (McGrady, Vince Carter, etc...) it could work reasonably well.

And enough with calling Gallinari a "bad pick" already. Based on what???? Lack of talent? Not the case - it's crystal clear that he's got the talent to help this club. The fact that he hurt himself? Come on. He's close to returning - let the kid heal up and crack the rotation - then we'll have a chance to better evaluate his game and find out where he fits in. It's a good problem to have, and I'm sure that's what D'Antoni's thinking also.

Chandler is a 3/4 in D'Antoni's system. MDA has already said he likes him as a 4. He likes Gallo as a 3 which he's also already said. He likes Jefferies as a 5 and Lee as a 4, or perhaps Lee will have to be moved. Then of course, ZBO who they will also try to move all season, I'm sure.

I don't see where the problem is at all? We're playing Malik, QRich and Curry now - that's plenty of minutes for Jefferies and Gallinari to soak up.

I don't like the idea of trying to force one player to play a position to compensate for the lack of ability of another. Walsh said Gallinari was drafted to play PF. I said it was a mistake at the time but people on this board said yeah, he can play it. Good bye Z-Bo and now it's like well he has to play the 3 because he can't play the 4. So everyone has to adjust. Funny I don't hear about growing pains and spurts anymore. What happen?

BTW, I'm not the one not allowing Gallinari to not play games. Gallinari is taking himself out of games.

Look every rookie that is getting ready to check in a game at the scorer's table is ahead of the Knicks right now.

From what I remember of it, Walsh felt he would grow into a 4. I don't think he was under any delusion that he was big enough and strong enough at the draft to be a full on PF. Besides which you have to allow that any Coach and GM will have to get their hands on a guy to see what they can really do. You may go in with ideas, but the reality of it comes when you can put him in your system, on your team and see what he can do. Doctors say he may yet still grow and we know he will likely mature into his frame, so saying he's a 4 makes sense for him down the line.

Exactly. I never remember the Knicks labeling this guy a PF when they drafted him either. When asked about him, Walsh said he's 6'10"/6'11" (easy Donnie, not yet he isn't), can really handle the ball, takes it well to the goal and is a lot better shooter than they realized. "He's an unusual package." Those were Donnie's words. Never once did he talk positions out on the court. He also mentioned that he didn't want to get caught up in comparing the kid to anyone else.

It's all right here, right on the Knicks website - here's the link:

http://iptv.nyknicks.com/nyknicks/console?type=fvod&id=543&catid=4

Go to page 4 and select the 'Walsh on Gallinari' clip.
