Is it possible we could sign them to very good deals, with them both taking a significant pay decrease in 2010... meaning that all the other years they get more money... but that one year they get less.. so that it wont count against our cap and we can still sign a good free agent?? does it work like that??

No. They aren't free agents. They have bird rights. The team that has their bird rights can sign them more than salary cap but cannot go over the hard cap. Also, since they are not free agents, their salaries can only be increase on an annual basis not decreased. Meaning, no front loading of a contract.

You have to sign Lee. Lets say you dont to make sure you dont have money in 2010. Do you really think Bosh, Lebron, or Wade would want to play with the misfits you have here? Sign Lee, hope gallo is good, then draft a big time point then you have a selling point to a free agent. Lee will cost an extra 15 million if you dont sign him this year.

It basically means that you can't front load a contract and significantly decrease at any point. All contracts can only be increased on decrease by 10.5% off the player's regular salary. These guys are in a union and are protected by that union.

I hope this helps. I am sorry that I did not explain it too well. It is from the CBA.

Every category (Regular Salary, Likely Bonuses and Unlikely Bonuses, respectively) that is increased for the Renegotiation Season must also be increased for each of the remaining Seasons of the Contract. For each Season of the Contract after the Renegotiation Season, the player’s additional Regular Salary may increase or decrease over the previous Season’s additional Regular Salary by no more than 10.5% of the additional Regular Salary provided for in the Renegotiation Season. In the event that the Renegotiation Season provides for additional Incentive Compensation, the amount of additional Likely Bonuses and Unlikely Bonuses provided for in each Season after the Renegotiation Season may increase or decrease by up to 10.5% of the amount of additional Likely Bonuses and Unlikely Bonuses, respectively, provided for in the Renegotiation Season.

Question, why do you think Isiah would not have signed Lee. He drafted the guy when draft experts and fans said it was a silly move with more "talented" players on the board. All signs pointed to Walsh trying to dump Lee before the draft.

I was just saying that Isiah made bonehead decisions that often seemed to go against what most thought was the right thing to do. Walsh seems more level headed. I don't think Walsh was TRYING to trade Lee, I think he was trying to improve the team and every team wanted Lee so of course he was involved in the talks. I give him credit for NOT trading Lee.

I just want our best player on our team long term, and thats David Lee.

I'm more for building thru the draft, breaking down our team completely and developing our young players like Mardy, Nate, Danillo, Wilson and Lee... Rather than avoiding signing the few good players we actually DO have on a crap shoot that we could land a superstar

We can disagree on whether he was trying to trade Lee because all reports suggested that Walsh did everything he could to do so but Lee and his agent blocked that move. But if your question was can they make such a deal no because the CBA, Billy Hunter, Lee and Robinson's agents will not allow them to make such a move.

Put it this way: You re-sign Lee and Robinson, kiss the 2010 dream goodbye. You will not find someone to take Curry, Crawford, AND Randolph in the next 2 years.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

Kiss the dream of signing LeBron straight out, but don't for a minute think that a sign-and-trade can't happen.

i was about to say... the Cavs ain't gonna be signing & trading Lebron to any team, much less the Knicks... if he leaves it's gonna be by his choice, not theirs.
After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.
