(1) Alan Hahn reporting that "the Knicks are still working on a deal to put a D-League team up in Harlem, but in the meantime they share an affiliate with the Reno Bighorns."
--- small piece of news but kinda funny considering the Knicks haven't utilized the D-league the right way even once since its inception.
(2) Alan Hahn, in a different blog, saying we should pass on Adam Morrison, who could be made available for a big man (hinting at Eddy Curry).
--- I agree. Morrison's young and he's got some talent (though he found out quickly that the NBA's not the WCC) but with Chandler now looking like a keeper and Gallo almost ready to start practicing with the team, what's the point of adding Morrison? Good chance Chandler and Gallo wind up becoming better pros than Morrison anyway. Along with Q-Rich, another SF we still have in the mix, I think we're fine at the 3 spot right now. Nobody wants Curry gone more than I do but not for Adam Morrison, who's coming off ACL surgery btw. Not a good match there. Hahn cites an article written by Rick Bonnell from the Charlotte Observer as the source for his Morrison blog. Interesting to note that Bonnell's article also mentions that the Bobcats just added Justin Williams to their roster. Regarding Williams, Bonnell wrote: "The Bobcats made a minor move Wednesday, signing free agent Justin Williams to an nonguaranteed contract... Late Wednesday, the Bobcats auditioned Williams, a 6-foot-10 power forward/center who played parts of the past two seasons with the Sacramento Kings. He was cut last week by the Golden State Warriors. Bobcats advance scout Brendan O'Connor, a former Kings assistant, recommended Williams to Brown. Williams is an energy player – a decent shot-blocker and offensive rebounder – so he has a chance on a team weak in those areas. 'He's a young, live, active kid. So we'll give him a chance,' said Brown. 'It will take a little time because he probably doesn't know what we're doing right now.'”
Let me get this straight - we've had a dire need for a tough interior defensive presence that'll protect the basket and haven't had anything remotely like that on this team since Marcus Camby was traded, Justin Williams becomes available at different times the past couple of years for league-minimum money (meaning ZERO RISK to bring him here to see what he can do) and yet again we pass on this kid but a team that already has Emeka Okafor, who's one of the better young rebounder/shot-blocker combos. in the entire league, picks him up because the Bobcats think they have a weakness in that area? Have I got that right? LOL! Charlotte should be proud of this guy O'Connor - here's a scout doing his job. I mean do we even have any scouts of our own out there????? I'm glad a few of us are in agreement that we lack this type of important role player. Now although I believe you just can't add any bum out there with some height and expect that type of presence (a scrub like Jake Voskuhl's not the answer for example), a cost-effective guy like Justin Williams and what he's known for would've been perfect for us. Wasted opportunity yet again to identify and possibly fix this problem...
(3) ESPN's Chad Ford basically saying damned if you do, damned if you don't regarding trading/keeping David Lee. Ford also thinks trading Eddy Curry for Erick Dampier might be something that could work for both teams.
--- Have to give it some more thought but as of right now I'm leaning toward re-uping our own guys that are worth keeping (specifically Lee) and if that interfers with 2010 free agency then so be it. We're really gonna have to step back and ask ourselves if having a crack at one of these prized 2010 free agents is even meant to be. We're gonna have to try like heck to get under the cap in time which is almost impossible, but say we did it, what guarantee do we have that Lebron's coming here? Is that type of uncertainty worth the risk of losing exciting up-and-comers like David Lee and Nate Robinson for nothing or in the wrong salary-dump type of deal? I'm not sure now, especially when you factor in Lee's vast improvement. Tough call... I do know this for certain though: there doesn't look like a more dedicated player in the league right now than David Lee. His improvement is to the point where I think we can all easily expect 16 & 10 a game, probably more. How do you just let a home-grown guy like that walk? As for this Curry for Dampier thing - it doesn't really work for the Knicks. Both guys are essentially locked up through the end of the 2010/2011 season at similar money. To be honest I'd prefer Dampier over Curry all things being equal because he's a better rebounder and shot-blocker than Curry (which isn't that hard for a player to be btw) - but things aren't equal - Curry's about 7 years younger than Dampier and on the age factor alone, you'd think Curry would be the easier guy to move if it came down to it. The only way you do this if you're the Knicks is if you get Cuban to kick in a Gerald Green (who would then make the team over both Houston and Roberson) or Dallas' 1st round pick next draft, which projects to be somewhere around 20 or lower. If Cuban did that, I could be interested. If not I pass and continue shopping all of our dead weight with no regrets.
