Layden traded Nene for a guy who had a big contract and major injury concerns. It was a mistake at the time. No one could predict Nene would turn out to have the difficulties he has had. As for Martin, I would hate to see him as a Knick for all the reasons mentioned in the article, and because he is not a good locker room guy and has a horrific contract. I have written this every time someone has suggested trading for him. He is a system guy who relied on athleticism when he was healthy to be effective.

u forgetting we also gave up Marcus Camby & Mark Jackson in the deal? & who's to say we only picked Nene because that's who DEN wanted? we coulda taken Amare Stoudamire that year w/that #7 pick or Caron Butler for that matter... that was 1 of the worst trades in Knicks' history, no ifs ands or buts about it... but then we did get Frank Williams in the deal, so i guess there's the silver lining.

It looks like Denver is getting ready to take over New York's dysfunctional crown.

I agree, and to make matters worst with such idiots running the show over there how could we have not come out on top of any deal we made with them.

We never really wanted any dafts cause at the time amare, butler and the whole 1st round was a crap shoot. No one was a for sure stud, and rebuilding in NY was not an option

Dice was coming off a major injury but nothing indicated he was injury prone and he's actually been pretty healthy since he's been out of ny, not to metion the crack head med staff that also drove allan into an early retirement. I don't even like Kmart off the court.

Nevertheless, this is a team that ran its way into the playoffs with defense nothing more than a rumor. They were the classic NBA contradiction, leading the NBA in blocks and steals, but second to last in points allowed — offsetting being second in points scored.

Once again, another sportswriter mislabeling the Nuggets defense "bad" based on outdated statistical measurements.
http://hoopsaddict.com/2008/08/08/advanced-stats-101-defense/
The most striking revelation comes from Denver, who is generally considered a very porous and uninspired defensive team (even if they had/have strong individual defenders such as Marcus Camby and Kenyon Martin). The Nuggets are 29th in the league using points against per game at 107, yet when we account for Denver’s fast pace and high number of possessions by looking at the measure on a per possession basis, they leapfrog all the way to 10th overall, ahead of the league average as well are defensive-minded teams such as Cleveland, Utah and Chicago

That's not to say they didn't consider defense in the offseason. They did acquire young 6-8 swingman Renaldo Balkman from the New York Knicks and he is a superb perimeter defender for at least the three smaller positions and occasionally on a slim power forward as well. Noted bruiser Ruben Patterson was also signed, he of the wacky demeanor and rugged one-on-one defensive skills.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

superb perimeter defender? really?? just cuz the guy tried hard and has almost no offensive skills doesn't mean he's automatically a superb perimeter defender. Thats malarkey.

kam, if anything this reporter seems to enjoy using arbitrary means of measuring players' ability.

Unfortunately, this is rampant amongst most sports fans as well, but sports writers perpetuate this stuff.

Color me confused, but I thought you were upset at the Balkman trade?

In fairness to him, I think he is a good perimeter defender, based on observation at least. His long arms and one-on-one shot blocking ability is what I would attribute that to, but "superb" is probably taking it a bit far.

I was opposed to trading Balkman. But when he was here i thought of him as a pesky defender. Not superb. Not all-pro. Good. A good defender. Several rungs below Artest level. He could improve and be superb one day. But at this point, he's not got a future in the league unless he becomes much better on defense.

Put it this way, bro. I don't really miss him right now. So I guess it was a good move. Has anyone thought "damn I wish we had Balkman" during this preseason?? Exactamundo.

I did forget about Camby and I loathed that trade for years. Its funny how my hatred for Isiah has clouded over parts of my memory.
