Knicks Close To Rights On A NBDL Team

Oct 07, 2008 4:29 PM EST

The Knicks are inching close to a deal with the NBA that would buy them the expansion rights to a Developmental League team.

Should the deal go down, the team is expected to be located in Harlem.

It's funny how this whole world is based on one dummy controlling another, and the leader dummy was chosen by a whole bunch of dummies.

See this is good and all but the idea of the NBDL is completely stupid when the player still counts against your roster. Stern needs to change this rule and have the NBDL as the true minor leagues of the NBA. No team wants to waste roster spots on guys who aren't even on the roster. Once this is fixed and once every single team has their own team, then will this be considered a big deal.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

I agree, counting against the roster is stupid, but it does prevent players from being shoved down in the D-League forever only to be ignored. Teams should take a page from the Lakers and basically use their D-League team as a practice squad for players, coaches and executives. Guys like Ewing Jr. and Gallinari would be better served playing than sitting on the bench in suits with Fat Asses like Curry and James.

They don't have to be down there forever. Make a rule where you can't have the same guy in the NBDL for more than 3 years. It would be perfect.

The argument against that has always been that a team keeps a guy down there for 3 years as opposed to forever, but with the same end result...minimal call ups. Whereas if a guy's on your roster, counting against not just your roster space, but your cap, there's a greater chance you either keep him or dump him, but he gets a better look.

I don't necessarily agree with the argument, just letting you know why the system is the way it is. If the NBA can't bombard us with the number of "T-Mobile Call-Ups" there's really no purpose in Stern's eyes. You didn't think he really gave a **** about player development did you?

I think it should be similiar to mlb.....give a place where dudes can play and make an honest living with the hopes of making it to the big show one day.

I love basketball and if there was a Nbdl team I would go to their games........but.........why harlem? I'm tired of harlem getting so much shine all the time. #1 its too crowded. They were thinking of using a site that used to be a big attraction back in our grandparents day. Its been bored up since. Dude! You kidding me? No way in the hell. If I'm not mistaken its an abandon building near city college. Come on man! Put the team in queens or at least in downtown brooklyn or in coney island or something. What about Chelsea?

I guess I'm just hating on Harlem, lol. Whatever dude. I'd go see them.

Exactly. It needs to be just like MLB. Each team has it's own private minor league club. They can send down and call up whoever they want from that club.

It will only work if they do it this way.

I thought the Knicks already had a NBDL team. Only, they're called the "Knicks" and they play in the NBA.

Yeah, the truth sucks....

Just remember though, Mike D makes everyone awesome, and our only problem all these years has been the wrong coach!

Who has said that? I think anyone who supported the D'Antoni hiring does so because they think he will help build a foundation and be the solid coach that we need 3 years from now when we have a real team..

Agreed. And there's the fact that pretty much every NBA player wants to play for Mike D'Antoni, which is an important consideration when the roster sucks and will only help expedite the rebuilding process.
