A TRUE KNICK

"If he can play and still has that deadly stroke, then how come he didn't try to hook up with a contender? Karl Malone did that late in his career with the Lakers. When Reggie Miller thought about making a comeback last season, he considered the Celtics. Who wants to come back to this? 'I thought about going to a team like that, but this is much bigger than trying to go and satisfy my desire to win a title,' Allan Houston said. 'This is about...I am a Knick. This is about trying to do whatever I can to help the Knicks improve and lend whatever experience I have. This is not about me saying, 'I've got to go win my ring. ... You know, when I was younger, I had people like John Starks and Patrick (Ewing) and Oak (Charles Oakley), and they taught me what it means to work and what it takes to win,' he said. 'This is about me passing on whatever I've learned to the guys. So I figured, if I'm going to do this, why not do it here, where I have my legacy?'"

Never liked him as a player but i hope he can become a bench player to at least be a good role model. Imagine Crawford with discipline!

This is about Houston being a Knick, but less so as a player than as a future executive. This is about getting to know Walsh, vying to be an eventual successor, and generally staying plugged in to the organization at fundamental level.

He ain't gonna win no ring anywhere else, but nor will he become a font office guy anywhere else. This is less about the now than it is about the future.

Lastly, he's also the "locker room monitor". I'm sure Dolan promised Walsh to be less engaged, which only increases his need for spies from within.

How sad and cynical of you.

I don't doubt Houston's honesty here. I think he's being sincere.

Yeah, I disagree. He's tried to make a comeback before when he obviously wasn't ready (and when Isiah was here). You do something like that because your life is empty without basketball. He obviously needs to play NBA ball. He doesn't need money. And he feels like he still has something to give.

He's young in life but very. very old as a BB player. Making a few buckets off the bench this year, at a point beyond late in his NBA carrer, is nothing compared to trying to secure a future in the NBA.

i'd love to see the guy as an assistant coach or working in the front office in some capacity.

someone needs to print that out & post it above Steph's empty locker next year.

Steph has no legacy in NY and anywhere else. He is just an average Jo in this respect.
Not too many people have legacy and this is quite normal. It is not normal and laughable if somebody acts like he has it.

i dunno if u'r implying that H20 is acting like he has a legacy in NY when he doesn't or if u're ragging on Steph for the same, but Houston was a major part of a championship contending team, which is a damn site closer to actually being a champion than most of us have been witness to around here... if guys like John Starks, Charles Oakley & Patrick Ewing have a legacy in NY, then so does Allan... we're not talking about some role player.

H20 has legacy in NY.
But he is not the all-NBA guy. Charles Oakley & Patrick Ewing are.
Huston is nice local name but no more than this.
But no doubt he is real professional and will be good influence on players and organization.
It's not take much however to be nice after Isiahs, Stephs, Zacks, and other "characters" on display.
