"The NBA will use leather basketballs in the NBDL next season, temporarily ending its attempts to re-introduce a composite ball at the NBA level, according to ESPN.com.

"We are committed to leather for the foreseeable future," said league spokesman Tim Frank. "We just realized leather is what our guys wanted."

The league introduced a composite ball at the start of the 2006-07 season, but after complaints that the balls became slick from perspiration and left tiny cuts on players' fingertips the league returned to leather in January 2007.

The plan now is to develop a two-paneled ball rather than the current eight-panel model."

Seriously... I don't understand the rational to change the ball. Has to be financially motivated because I cna't think of any other explanation

cause the league only makes what, $12 Billion a year?

Those balls might have seemed like a good idea, but they handled the transition poorly.

when, if ever, they get the composite balls right

a) balls will be good right out of the box (leather balls need to be "broken in")
b) cheaper to make
c) more reliable bounce, less slippery ball

I'll add...

d) interchangable - able to use a couple game balls that will be no different in feel or play. You see this in volleyball where each match has a set of game balls that are rotated throughout play.
