Was just wondering - maybe the whole 'include a 1st rounder' thing might actually be a rumor floated by the Knicks - Donnie refuses, the trade gets done with the original parts in a few days and Donnie looks like a hero with the fans for holding on to the pick. Who knows........

I kind of mentioned something similar in one of the other threads on this subject. Lots of posturing going on- some for real, and some for the fans. The Knicks took on Randolph in a trade which some did not like, and Memphis made the Gasol deal and the draft day trade which some of their fans may have criticized. I am not going to say that any of these moves were justified or unjustified, just that the organizations who made them may feel sensitive to public scrutiny at this time.
Do we know whether or not the original deal that Memphis seemed to accept included a #1 and/or the deferred payment $$, or if these were added on later because of this or that reason? The original trade rumor only dealt with the specific players, and the Knicks seemed to be trying to get a someone to replace Jaric and his 3 yr. contract. Then the deferred $$ was mentioned first, and now we hear about the #1. Maybe the real problem is that the sources for the rumor are not getting the complete story from any particular official, and that is why things seem to be coming out drip by drip. Painful for us, but why the hell should they care whether we are able to see every little detail about the trade?
All of this could simply be part of the bargaining process- or maybe something else going on, more related to face-saving and public relations than the actual trade. Who knows?
Hopefully this thing can get finalized soon.
