Griz lose Bennett to Knicks
Posted by Ronald Tillery
Ronald Tillery

Another day, another Grizzly defection.

Shawn Bennett, director of promotions and event presentations, will leave in two weeks to work as Vice President of Event Presentations for the New York Knicks. Strength and conditioning coach Mike Curtis left last week to work for the University of Michigan.

Bennett served the Grizzlies well over the past two seasons, bringing energy and creativity to the position. He joined the Griz in 2006 after spending three seasons with the Orlando Magic.

Some people may remember Bennett, an Indiana native, for his work with the Redbirds from 2000-03.

“It’s a great opportunity to perform in the world’s most famous arena,” Bennett said, referring to Madison Square Garden. “That’s the attraction for me. It’s a great opportunity to be on that stage.”

- - - RUMOR MILL KEEPS CHURNING: Any potential Memphis deal involving New York forward Zach Randolph is now in the Knicks’ court from what I’m told. The Griz will agree to a package that includes Darko Milicic and Marko Jaric going to the Knicks for Randolph. But Griz brass apparently wants the Knicks to pick up most of the deferred payments owed Randolph in the latter year of his contract.

New York executives supposedly are deliberating. Randolph is owed $14.6 million, $16 million and $17.3 million over the next three seasons.

In short, this seems to be a 50/50 proposition – a scenario that bears watching until the start of the regular season.

The person who ran promotions for the Knicks during the Isiah years really, really, really sucked. Glad they brought someone new.

As for that rumor that keeps popping up, it sucks ass. Jaric's deal runs the same length as Randolph's. What's the point? Replace Jaric with Walker and then I'd do it.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

I hear you on Jaric's deal but at the same time isn't his deal 1/3rd the value of Zach's deal in year 3? That still allows the Knicks to free up considerable salary while also moving someone whom apparently they don't like. Marco's deal would be alot easier to move right before 2010 free agent period at $6-$7M then Zach's $17M #. Plus there's the chance that Darko pans out.

Personally - I don't see Darko and Eddy working well together but that is more out of distaste for Eddy. Darko would at least give us a big guy who will present some type of interior presense and he could also provide insurance when big Eddy's knees go out from all the weight he carries around.

08/09 09/10 10/11
zach randolph $14,666,666 $16,000,000 $17,333,333

darko milicic $7,000,000 $7,500,000
marko jaric $6,575,000 $7,100,000 $7,625,000

knicks would save $9,703,333 in cap during the summer of 2010...

Darko is a big guy with a short contract and therefore movable. Marko will be the next Raja Bell under D

I don't like Jaric one bit and I'm not any kind of Darko fan but Zach HAS to go. I *think* I'd do this deal but as pointed out Walker would be better given he's essentially an expiring deal as his final year was changed to a team option when he was traded to Miami way back when.

Given that having 7.6M of Jaric instead of 17M of Zach in 2011 is quite a bit better - again - I think you consider pulling the trigger here.

This could also further push the needed departure of Marbury via buyout.

Knicks shouldn't have to pick up any salary in Zach's final year.

Make the trade straight up and lets go on with our lives. At this point I would like to begin getting ready for training camp. I'd want all of our players already fcomfortable and ocused on camp instead of scrambling trying to get their personal lifes assimulated and playing catch up.

I personally like Marko & agree he would do very well with D'Antoni.

If we're able to move Zach & Curry has a big year, maybe he opts out on his player option- that is a potential savings for us.

You know why Marko Jaric would be a good fit here? He gets a lot of steals and the D'Antoni pace is predicated on creating turnovers on defense. He can also stick an open 3- he actually makes some sense here.

Darko also would help because he can block shots in addition to board- again creating more transition opportunities.

Is it equal talent? Probably not. But it saves us some cash, can fit our philosophy and improve chemistry. We should pull the trigger.

The Zaxh for a second rounder (+ trade exception) looks light years better to me.

I would definitely do this trade. I mean, Darko is a big project, but we need shotblockers, especially with Curry, so it at least puts a little balance in the frontcourt. I hope this is true and Walsch pulls the trigger.

Marko would be OK in D'Antoni's thing too, even though I'm not a huge fan.

Here is a tidbit of information. Marko has worked out at the Knicks facility with Lee this summer more than any of the current Knicks players. He would love to become a knick.

Not any hints I just know Marko wants to be here and he has been working out of the facility because he lives in NYC in the summer

Knicks shouldn't have to pick up any salary in Zach's final year.

i don't care if they had to pay his entire salary to get rid of him as long as it comes off our cap.

With this move we would have to get rid of 2 players to get under 15. JJFat and Dinglebury? Malik?
