If the Cincinnati Bengals' offseason couldn't get any more strange, Pro Bowl receiver Chad Johnson may have added a new chapter just before the regular season.

According to Miami radio station 790 The Ticket, which is in Johnson's hometown, the receiver has legally changed his last name to "Ocho Cinco." Johnson's -- sorry -- Ocho Cinco's reported name change has been rumored in NFL circles for weeks, and according to the station today, it's official.

Johnson forewarned the public that a major surprise was coming during a recent interview with Chris McKendry on ESPN's SportsCenter.

That's pathetic.

Attention Whores like him and Gilbert Arenas are not funny, are not innovative, and their cult followings are a scary bunch.

It's unneeded garbage like this that taints the pro games. It's low brow high school ****.

Gotta love Chad, he usually does not mean malice with his antics, although this past offseason that wasn't the case. I think overall he's a good dude, who just wants to win and have fun at the same time.

We're all entitled to our opinions of course. To me, it's pro sports, so act professional and leave the side show for retirement. I'd expect it from high school kids and maybe from some college kids. Yet professionals? Yeah, kinda takes a dump on the whole "professional" angle IMO.

I try my best to ignore it but these days everyone seems to want to be a clown.

their antics probably garnered themselves a nice bit of extra coin they would've never seen if they just acted professional. yes, they might be attention whores...but i think the driving purpose is the all mighty dollar...

"Professional" entertainers. Sports have always been a breeding ground for the cult of personality.
With or without the antics. So what?

I like Chad. I have no problem with players having fun off and on the field as long as they play hard. If this is true I think the timing of this is poor based on what the Bengals have gone through this offseason.

I think it is awesome that the media is now obligated to refer to him as Ocho Cinco. You have to give him credit for coming up with ways to beat the system time and time again, after the NFL repeatedly comes up with ways to make him stop. I think of pro sports increasingly as entertainment... what's entertaining to me is wins, so as long as the antics don't disrupt the team or hinder production, it's fine by me. And Ocho Cinco, despite his antics, performs. Honestly, I wish he was on the Giants so I could buy a jersey.

Supreme: I agree with you, but how do you feel about the timing of this. With all the offseason turmoil do you think this may have an effect on the Bengals. On a grand scale it's a harmless act but for the Bengals at this point in time it may be another distraction.

They should trade him to a team where #85 is a retired number to teach him a lesson on humility and cause him to have an identity crisis.

It's going to be pretty amusing to hear him being referred as Ocho Cinco.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chad_Johnson
The Cincinnati Bengals chose Ocho Cinco in the second round (36th Overall) during the 2001 NFL Draft.

[edit] 2001-2005
Ocho Cinco saw moderate playing time as a rookie, catching 28 passes for 329 yards and one touchdown. In 2003, Ocho Cinco set a Bengals franchise record by recording 1,355 receiving yards. In 2004, Ocho Cinco caught 95 receptions for 1,274 yards and 9 touchdowns. In one of the most impressive games, the 58-48 win against the Cleveland Browns, Ocho Cinco had 117 receiving yards. He later surpassed the record in 2005, recording 1,432 yards. Ocho Cinco has led the AFC in receiving yards for four consecutive seasons, and he has made the Pro Bowl 5 straight times in 2003,2004,2005, 2006, and in 2007.[5]

[edit] 2006
On April 20, 2006, Ocho Cinco signed a contract extension. The deal, which pays Ocho Cinco an additional $35.5 million, will last up to 2011.[6]

During the first half of 2006 Cincinnati Bengals season, Ocho Cinco saw little activity. After being bogged down by an early injury, Ocho Cinco's productivity endured a sharp decline. During the first eight weeks of the 2006 season, Ocho Cinco only caught two touchdown passes, while only amassing 483 yards. However, after shaving his Mohawk and changing his mentality, Ocho Cinco had a breakout game in a losing effort against the San Diego Chargers. Ocho Cinco accumulated 260 receiving yards and scored two touchdowns, which broke the previous Bengals record for most receiving yards in a game.[7]. He went on to amass 190 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns in a 31-16 win over the New Orleans Saints in the following week. This gave him an NFL record 450 receiving yards in back-to-back games, breaking the previous record of 448 set by San Francisco 49ers receiver John Taylor in 1989. In the following week, Chad gained 129 yards receiving breaking the three game receiving record since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970 and coming within 40 yards of the all-time record.

Ocho Cinco finished the 2006 season with 87 receptions for a league leading 1,369 yards and 7 touchdowns. He was the first Bengal ever to lead the NFL in receiving yards. He and Houshmandzadeh also became the first Bengals teammates to each amass over 1,000 receiving yards in the same season.

In addition to being one of the most productive receivers in the NFL, Ocho Cinco is also one of the most popular ones. In the fan voting for the 2006 Pro Bowl, Ocho Cinco finished first in votes for wide receivers, and fourth overall with 987,650 total votes. He has earned nationwide attention for his flamboyant attitude, which is often seen during his infamous end zone celebrations after catching touchdown passes. In a list released in August 2006 by Fox Sports listing the top 10 showboats in professional sports, Chad topped the list.[9] Furthermore, Ocho Cinco has drawn even more attention to himself with his gilded grills, earrings, and as of 2006, his bleach blond mohawk, which he eventually shaved off after subsequent losses.

Before teammate Chris Henry was suspended for eight games of the 2007 season due to off-field issues, Ocho Cinco spoke of Henry in an interview with ESPN which was featured on NFL Live. He said in the interview of how Chris tried to act like a "hardball" and went a little too far, and that "everyone gets it".

[edit] 2007
In the first game of the season, on Monday Night Football against the Baltimore Ravens, Chad Ocho Cinco scored the game's first score on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Carson Palmer. Following the touchdown, Ocho Cinco grabbed a jacket that resembles the Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees' jacket that said, "Future H.o.F 20??". Ocho Cinco finished the game with 5 receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown. In the next game against the Cleveland Browns, Ocho Cinco racked up 209 yards on 11 catches for 2 touchdowns in the 51-45 loss. This gave him a career total of 7,229 receiving yards, breaking the Bengals franchise record previously held by Isaac Curtis. The very next game against the Seattle Seahawks, Ocho Cinco totaled nine receptions for 138 yards as the Bengals lost again. Against the New York Jets, in which the Bengals won 38-31, Ocho Cinco had 3 receptions for 102 yards and a rush for 15 yards.

In the fourth quarter of the Bengals Week 9 loss to the Buffalo Bills Chad was rolled off the field on a stretcher, with a reported head injury. Ocho Cinco had dove out for a pass, with under a minute left in the 33-21 loss, and then was sandwiched by Donte Whitner and Coy Wire. Ocho Cinco was reported to be moving at the hospital.[10] He finished the game with three catches for 48 yards. A CT scan performed to detect nerve damage came back negative. Ocho Cinco did not miss any games due to the injury.

Over his next two games, Ocho Cinco didn't score any touchdowns or gain more than 86 yards. But he had a breakout performance in a November 25 win over the Tennessee Titans, catching a career high 12 passes for 103 yards and 3 touchdowns. This gave him over 1,000 receiving yards for the sixth consecutive season. He also surpassed Carl Pickens as the Bengals all-time leader in receptions.

By week 15, Ocho Cinco and Houshmandzadeh both gained over 1,000 receiving yards for the second year in a row. However, a loss to the San Francisco 49ers that week ensured the team would finish the year with their first losing season since 2002. Ocho Cinco finished the season with 4 catches for 131 yards and 2 touchdowns in a win over the Miami Dolphins, giving him 93 receptions for 1,440 yards and 8 touchdowns on the season.

His 1,440 yards set a new Bengals franchise record, breaking his own record of 1,432 in 2005. It was the third time that Ocho Cinco finished a season with a new Bengals record for receiving yards. Ocho Cinco's yardage was third most in the NFL, his receptions were 12th most, while his touchdowns were tied for 15th most in the league. Ocho Cinco was passed up on for the 2008 Pro Bowl team, instead selecting his teammate T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

He has played in 103 consecutive games since his rookie season in 2001.

I'm not sure there ever is a right time to pull something like this. If I were the head coach, I'd be pissed. Anything that takes focus off of football isn't optimal for winning games. That said, I don't think this is terrible. I think the celebrations are worse as changing your name doesn't show up the opponent. And who knows, maybe this distraction is welcomed in Bengalsland because it doesn't have to do with a player being a terrible person, but rather someone taking fun to new extremes.
