I understand the forum needs to have income and it does so through advertising. It is now the season for political ads and I don't see anything wrong with them in general but I am personally turned off by negative ads. What do other members of UK think about this.

What I'd like to see are ads that show the candidate's good traits. Why one should vote for that candidate. And no attack ads which try to depict the opponent in a negative way.

If we set a higher standard, then maybe, just maybe, the candidates will raise their own standards. They will have to put out some positive ads to be on sites like this.

No, just give them a warning!

Here are the rules of etiquette for UK. (Top thread on Page 1) Shouldn't we hold the next President of the U.S. to the same high standards Martin and Andrew hold us to if he is going to post (advertise) on this site?
.....we just want to remind everyone of some of the guidlines for this forum.

While healthy debate and discussion is fine, please refrain from rudeness, insulting posts, personal attacks or purposeless inflammatory posts. If it's severe enough you will lose your account privileges.

Martin and Andrew do not control the ads. Google has ads in its queue that it rotates. The content of the ads is meant to relate to the subject matter of the page itself. Whether they are negative or not is not controllable.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

I am pretty sure this is a joke.

I didn't mean it as a joke but it doesn't look like many are interested in election campaign reform starting at home. So this can be withdrawn. No problem.

Ooh- If this site had wanted, Google could have been approached to not run the ads if we found them offensive. We don't berate other members on this board (or other sports boards I've been on) so why allow the Presidential candidates to berate each other on this site?

Well I personally don't like the negative ads period. Maybe we should just write the candidates a letter. They won't read it anyway but maybe if we smear caca on the on the letter before we mail it.....the message would be clearly scent, budum bum!

as soon as we stop talking p0litics, the ads will go away.

there might be a way for Martin & Andrew to filter them.

Of course, the campaigns might avoid xxx related content, so perhaps we need to sticky the alba thread and turn off the foul language filter.

I do not think you are correct. That is not how Google's advertising works. These ads are not manually placed. They are placed by an algorithm that detects the content of the page and then the algorithm retrieves an ad that is in a related category and places it on the page. If we go nuts talking about Britney Spears she will magically appear.

It may be possible for Martin and Andrew to change their preferences so that ads of a political nature do not appear, but I don't know for sure. They may be able to approach Google and ask them not to run any of these attack ads but I doubt they will be successful.

It looks to me like John McCain's campaign has ramped up the online attack ads big time. I guess they are not as far behind the technology as it appeared.

But honestly I don't think it is a big deal. I ignore the ads.

You should just get an adblock program. Firefox comes with one built-in or you can download a better one called "Ad Block Pro"

I dont mind ads and I think the more times we click on the ads, more money comes to this site. And I am for that. But different ads would get more hits.

Oohah,
I just picked up on your idea and realized something.

So by starting this thread and using the words - "Negative Political Ads, President, elections", etc Google is picking these terms and sending us these type of ads - Negative Political Ads. I guess they dont understand the word "No"! So by trying to stop these kinds of ads, I've actually increased their frequency. LMAO right now. What a world!
