Former Blazer Duckworth, dead at 44
Former Portland Trail Blazer Kevin Duckworth has died.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Duckworth, 44, died Monday in the town of Kernville near the coastal town of Lincoln City.

Duckworth was a starter for the 1990 and 1992 Western Conference Champion Trail Blazers and was one of the NBA's most improved players in 1988.

Duckworth was on the coast as part of a Trail Blazers group hosting a free kids basketball clinic and visiting with fans. The cause of his death was not released Tuesday morning.

Duck was a good guy.

Its freaky what can happen to suppose world class atheltes. I suspect he was still a big guy? Eddy, tractor trayler, and sweetney are others that might not be long for this world if they get even bigger.

I recall a few years back that an NFL lineman with 10 years in the league (a long career if you think about it) average mortality was only 57years.

Was that steroids? enlarged heart? Kidney failure due to anti-inflamitories? Cancer rates high (see NY giants history) Hypertension?

I don't know, but these mountain of men who keep it on don't seem to live that long.

Its a sad day for the Duckworth Family, my heart goes out to them.

Damn man 44 is still so young. Sad man. Hearing stuff like this just reminds you how short and random life is.

We gotta learn not to take life so seriously. A plane can crash into my house right now. Will whatever I was worried about before that even matter?

God bless the dead.

We don't know when our time is but if we did what would we do?

That Trailblazers team of Porter, Drexler, Jersey, Williams, and Kevin Duckworth was one of my favorties of all-time. Even though they did not win a chanpionship, they were fun to watch. It is sad that he died at such a young age. It makes me realize that we all need to make the most of each moment. RIP Duckworth.

That was a good team--Danny Ainge was on that team as well. They went like 17-00 to start the season. I really cant speak on his death--it's just way to young to even consider. I would hope everyone had a fair chance to live 85 years--life is so short anyway.

Here are a couple of pic of Duckworth before he died

Below, courtesy of the Portland Trail Blazers, are pictures of Duckworth from this past Monday, August 25. The second picture (the group photo) is from the Tillamook YMCA following a kids free basketball clinic for about 65 kids in conjunction with the Statewide Summer Tour.

He was a little big to begin with but athletes tend to balloon after retirement.

RIP.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Oregon officials say an autopsy shows former Portland Trail Blazers center Kevin Duckworth died when his enlarged heart failed. Duckworth died Monday at 44 on the Oregon coast, where he was on a goodwill tour for the team.

The Oregon State Police said Wednesday the autopsy was done by Dr. Larry Lewman, a state medical examiner who concluded that Duckworth died of "hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with congestive heart failure."

The police statement says the heart disease had combined with high blood pressure to result in "marked enlargement of his heart which had been failing for some time."
