John Gabriel, a former N.B.A. executive of the year with the Orlando Magic, has joined the Knicks’ revamped front office and will assume a key role in rebuilding the roster after seven straight losing seasons.

Donnie Walsh, the team president, appointed Gabriel as the director of pro scouting and free agency, a newly created position. Gabriel’s primary duty will be evaluating current N.B.A. players, with an eye toward future trades and free-agent signings.

I don't mind Gabriel. So does that mean he's going to be GM when Walsh retires?

Gabriel is well versed in the art of rebuilding. He was the Magic’s general manager from 1996 to 2004, a period in which the franchise lost Shaquille O’Neal to free agency and traded Penny Hardaway, but restocked by obtaining Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady.

Gabriel was named executive of the year in 1999-2000, after orchestrating 37 transactions that netted nine first-round draft picks and created the salary-cap space to sign Hill and McGrady.

decent choice! Walsh doesn't play, he just revamped his whole front office with new members.

John Gabriel's tenure with the magic was mostly hamstrung by his horrendous luck with the Grant Hill move. That being said he was pretty week as a drafter- Keyon Dooling, Courntey Alexader, Reese Gaines and Stephen Hunter all in the top 15? Ouch.

Wasn't Gabriel forced out in Orlando? I know he isn't like much in Orlando because of the Hill trade. I mean is this the best Donnie can get? No young genius or up and comer? I rather have Billy King than Gabriel. I hope he gets along with his players better this time around.

Love this move, Gabriel is a solid GM.

Aside from the moves that others have mentioned already, Gabriel did draft Mike Miller and Maggette (although he is responsible for trading both as well) and drafted ZaZa Puchulia in the 2nd round. He also got great value for Penny Hardaway when it was clear to Magic brass that his injuries were going to hamper him in his career. Great move by him.

Solid moves by Gabriel, it seems like he's good at recognizing when something isn't going to work anymore and gets into breaking things down. Sounds perfect for us and roster!

why? now we have walsh gabriel grunwald dantoni and isiah gabriel is like the worst drafting GM in the league and my guess is that is why he is not in the league. its easy to finally get cap space and offer it to a tier 1 FA in a beautiful city but he has a bad track record even with that manager of the year award. he drafted like 5 guys in the lottery who werent 1st round talents. we should be patient and when popovich is FA THEN go after him

Well Briggs, Gabriel isn't going to have anything to do with drafting, so it shouldn't really matter about his drafting.

He'll be in charge of pro scouting and that's something he was good at when you look at his roster transaction. He got great value in the Penny and Maggette trades.

I don't want him no where need pro scouting either. The guy doesn't have an eye for talent either. Gabriel is still blasted here in Orlando on the Magic radio show for many of his lateral moves. He prefers players of high character over talented players because of his God complex. I just can't believe this is the best guy Donnie could find. What's going on with this organization. Acquiring Hill is still his best move (McGrady was coming to Orlando no matter what, wanted to get away from Vince's shadow, no state tax and plenty of sun).

After being fired in March 2004, Gabriel joined the front office of the Portland Trail Blazers, who have undergone a transformation that the Knicks surely hope to emulate. Once saddled with a bloated payroll and a roster of bad actors, the Blazers are now one of the most promising young teams in the league.

Was about to say that. Let's see if they can get rid of some of the other members from Team Buffet
