What kind of products do I need to make sure I can avoid virus, identity theft, spyware, slow computer peformance, etc.? Right now, I only have Ad-Adware 2007(free from LavaSoft) and an outdated McAfee virus protection software.

I haven't kept up to date on how to better safeguard my PC, and didn't have incentive to since I only had one virus issue in my 12 years of using a PC, and don't hear too much about my friends getting viruses either. Also, I have been shopping online more frequently, and I am wondering if there are any tips on protecting myself from identity theft. So any links/recommendations would be much appreciated.

Many Internet Service Providers offer free Anti-virus software. I'm a comcast customer and they offer a free version of McAfee, I'd recommend looking into that.

If not, I'd recommend purchasing Symantec Anti-Virus or McAfee.

If you are using XP, IOBit has free personal software you can use for many of these things excluding anti-virus
If you are using Vista, http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx

http://free.avg.com/ is of course a cheaper alternative to symantec.

Now if you are a Mac user, you can forget about most of these problems. Switched from PC to Mac and never been happier :)

NOD32 and McAfee are my recomended antivurs (I have one of them in each of my 2 PC's). They do their job fine and they dont use much system memory, so your PC works as if they were not being used.

For spyware Adware or Ad-AWare (get the newest version of course) is good, but its been a while since I used it.

Just got a new antivirus prog called Panda.

So far very very good and uses MUCH less memory then both McAfee and Norton.

Highly recommend.

Good choices subzero0. I've used both for years, but now use Linux and don't have to worry about that anymore
But for windows users both are very well regarded.

Don't D/L any porn or use limeware, and you'll be fine.
