Well I don't know about the actual country India, but I'm noticing kids in the states, east indian kids, dribbling basketballs in the street, and going to the parks playing. Its only a matter of time.

Its gonna be like any other sport......the mens gymnastics team had a kid with chinese blood and another with some east indian blood. Its only a matter of time before an asian american pops up and has a successfull pro career in hoops.

I think its a shame how we want to recruit outside the country when the talent is here.

How many times have you seen a mexican kid, or an asian kid, or an east indian kid get his dreams shut down just cuz nobody wants to encourage the kid and try to teach them the game? My sons brother was in a little recreation center basketball league. He was in the 8-10 league. They were expecting the kids to be mad nice already. There was no teaching involved and the only kids that got run were kids that already knew how to play. It was so bad that the coaches stop showing up, so the parents had to help. I took over my kids brothers team for the remainder of the year. Don't you know the kids that "couldn't play" was now playing lock down defense and passing the ball like no other? There's more than one way to play and our coaches here in the states are not doing their jobs......there was a mexican kid for example that couldn't dribble or shoot for **** but he was quick and was stealing anything cleanly if you dared to try and dribble in front of him. The kids had fun and they got better. Their confidence was up. They were having fun instead of acting like it was a punishment.

As I keep saying, the nba and this country as a whole need to take care of our own. There are all types of races lurking in the country that need help.
Question....ever seen an nba presence in your state? How bout in nyc? I'm not talking JR. Knicks......I'm talking nba coaches and players teaching the game to kids the way they do it overseas......ever see that? I'm not talking bout 3 day camps were you gotta pay thousands of dollars to hear John Starks talk about bagging groceries.

Its a damn shame.

Eny,

Good experience. I used to coach my son and all the kids got the same time. I told the parents that from day one. I told them we would win, and lose both. I told them some kids are better than others but they are 8 and if they want to move their kids to promote their ability they should leave now.

I had one leave.

He went to a stacked team that destroyed everyone and was miserable because not all the kids played the same amount. They beat us by 40.

The next time they only beat us by 10. What happened? I asked my boys what we should do and they were dejected and said "no way we can beat them!" Then I asked: "if we only lost by less than 20 would it not be better then the first game?" They agreed. Then I asked what can we do to stop them? They said "better defense". So we did not try to outscore them we played really strong defense and took them out of their rythem. Or make them play down to our level. We also decided to make it more fun and we thought that if we joked around and laughed it might frustrate them even more if we could keep it close. They were so uptight about individual performance we got them to argue amung themselves.

After the game we celebrated our "victory". I went over to shake the other coaches hands and they asked me what my kids were celebrating. They were quite perplexed. The arrogant pricks were uptight. I paused and looked at my kids jumping around like they won and knew that I could not really explain to them that 8 year olds should not be this competitive and it was the parents, so I simply replied:

"Life! They are celebrating life!"

I joined them and bought them ice cream afterwards,

We were .500 that year, and the only team to play that select team close the whole season. They went undefeated. We had fun.

there are some courts but not nearly enough considering the population. also i got a chance to watch some of the "professional league" games this past winter and they did not look very good - i'd say they played at the level of good high school teams in the US. I would guess that we would see an Indian-American make it into the NBA before we saw someone straight from india, given the fact that cricket, field hockey and soccer are much more popular over there and basketball is somewhat of a 2nd or 3rd tier sport

You have been living in the boonies V India has basketball courts they usually use the basketball pole to tie the animals to. In the cities the parks have basketball courts and every major university has basketball courts. Take it from me I played college basketball there in India this was 10 years ago. The country has made advances in that reguard.

I watched a game/practice in South India by the city's professional team - around the year 2000. I would say they would compare to a lower level division 2 college team. Some talent but in need of coaching and practice. I think a couple of the players had grown up in the US.

In India, the main sport is cricket. Every kid plays cricket and avidly follows it . Basketball is hardly played, but now with all of the exposure from the Olympics and with everyone in the middle class having cable TV, the sport's popularity should grow.

The problem is that the government doesn't throw in a ton of money at sports. Yeah universities will have courts, but they're not readily available in most towns (at least the ones my family there are from) when you are growing up. As Markji said its a cricket culture- the only sport that really matters. But even with that, they only really started a major national cricket league within the past year.

This is not like the Chinese government which places a directive on sports and has been training Yao and players like him since birth (practically), and have them playing for their government sponsored miliatary teams.

Indian Americans are a different story. Most Indian Americans that I grew up with love basketball and have been playing since they were kids. I think we'll eventually see one make it to the NBA (although they haven't sneaked into major college bball yet from what I recall)

Must see - Taj Mahal in Agra
5 Star Hotels are very pricey these days, more expensive than here. Rent a condo (called flat a la British English).
Go for a co-workers wedding or something like that, you will have a great time
Some serious jet-lag if you're going there for the first time.

If you plan it right, you can do a round trip to the Great Wall in China.

Bottled Water only!!

if you're not the adventurous type - like staying in hostel's, backpacking, etc...then just do a tour. it will cost somewhere around $2800 for a 9 day tour where you hit 3 big tourist spots up north. it's hectic trip physically (flight, land travel, etc) and you will see alot of poor people, but it's also very spritual.

Dj in the muthafukin clutch again!

well how would you (anybody willing to answer) like someone visiting to experience India?

Ex. Whenever my country biscuit and cornbread eaten reletives come up to NY for a visit.......me and my sis like to take them all over to places outside of their comfort zone and not what they expect NY to be like. "Dang, I didn't know NY was this darn big!" lol. Of course you take them to see the sights that we take for granted like the empire state building, but we also take them down to the weed spot down on.......lol just kidding but you know what I mean right?
