He is playing in some kind of qualifying tournament with the Italian team, though.

Umm, they're not even in the same qualifying region or continent for that matter.

Iran is in the Asian region, which was allowed one team to qualify. Europe had 5 teams (Russia, Germany, Croatia, Lithuania, Greece)+ Spain (as the World Championships winner), almost all of whom have current and former NBA players playing for them or are considered amongst the best national teams in the world.

And how would Italy's performance as a national team necessarily say a whole lot about their league's quality, which brings in players from around the world to play in it?

England is jammed packed with many of the best players in the world but did not qualify for their own regional championship, Euro 2008 soccer tournament, this year (which is easier to qualify for than the World Cup), yet also has arguably the best league in the world.

In other words, Europe is a highly competitive region.

FIBA has Italy ranked 7th in the world. The US is ranked 1, Argentina 2, Spain 3, Serbia 4 (who also didn't qualify), Lithunia 5, Greece 6.

I find it interesting that one can be so quick to judge something that one appears to know little about, based on another judgment of something one also seems to not be well informed of.

This is a somewhat transparent criticism of the Knicks' pick of Gallinari.

The Italian national team is not same as the Italian component of the Euroleague.

You would have some kind of case if the Knicks had taken Gallinari based on his play in a purely Italian high school/university type league. As it was, he played with and against grown men, many of whom had played NBA or U.S. college ball at some point or another.

Now is the time to see how the kid develops in the NBA, don't you think? You will have all the time you want to be critical of him if he can't play the NBA game.

Well, according to an Italian poster here, he said Gallinari's back is getting better but not fully healed. Further he hasn't been able to practice
with the Italian team. Looks like he's getting much needed rest?

No matter your age a run in with "The Tractor" can have it's impact.

No structural damage, just needs rest.

It would've been interesting to see him play with his national team, but really it doesn't matter in the end. His future development is all that's important.

As for his back problem, I thought this "fragile" tag was refuted quite soundly in the Hahn Blog. Every source in the know said the kid was tough and never really had any injury issues that would suggest he's fragile. This is a back issue man and it really doesn't take much to tweak a back. These aren't always serious issues either. Often it's just a sore muscle and not a disc problem. As long as he can make it to camp and play a full season I'm not concerned about how short or long his healing process is or isn't. None of us know for sure.

I'm happy we took Gallinari, but I have to admit that I would really like to hear an official diagnosis of the injury and a prognosis for his recovery.

Since it is taking this long to heal, I really hope that he stays out of competition with the Italian team.

It's more than something muscular and they are not catching it. I played football in college and we used to lift weights after the games and play pick up basketball the next day[the only off day of the week] no matter what ailed you. The kid is 19-20 years old and its been months--this is not a 32 year old guy. When has a nondescript injury ever put a 19 yo out? If it's muscular and you're 19 you either play through it or take some aspirin/Motrin whatever makes it go away. They better throw him in for another MRI. Look what they did with Bynum--they missed diagnosed his knee injury and caused him to lose 2/3 of the season. If they correctly diagnosed it--he wouldve been back for the last 1/4 of the season and the playoffs. This is just a wrong sign not to be taken lightly. If you're 19 and you just cannot go--something is wrong and he could aggravate it or cause compensation injury.

The Knicks would not let him play in Italy if it was super-serious- that I am sure of. This is the only thing that makes me believe his problem is not major.

I still think it might be related to weight work he had been doing prior to the SL. No proof- just a feeling, because I had read that one of the Knicks trainers said he was working out hard. If I remember correctly, didn't Chandler have some problems later in the SL? I remember him be stretched out in the same way Gallinari had been stretched.

Not that worried, but it would be nice if the Knicks revealed more.
