Griz sign Hawks' Smith to offer sheet
By Ronald Tillery (Contact), Memphis Commercial Appeal

The Memphis Grizzlies have sent a contract offer worth $58 million to Atlanta Hawks restricted free agent Josh Smith today, according to multiple NBA sources.

As the only team left with significant room under the salary cap, the Griz have shifted out of a summer holding pattern and targeted the versatile 6-9, 235-pound forward.

Atlanta has seven days to match, per league rules, once Smith receives the offer sheet.

Smith's numbers have increased in each of his four NBA seasons since Atlanta made him a first-round pick out of high school in 2004. He averaged 17.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.8 blocks last season, helping the Hawks make the playoffs.

The Hawks have said they would match any contract offer to the 22-year-old Smith, but are on the hook next season with big contracts for Mike Bibby and Joe Johnson.

Should the Griz land Smith he is expected to play power forward alongside Rudy Gay at small forward, O.J. Mayo at shooting guard and Mike Conley at point guard.

Excuse me I don't understand.

If your Memphis why did you just do this?

Isn't the object to create an offer that won't be matched? Memphis just put together an offer that Atlanta will probably match without much thought (at least I think so).

So if that's the case - didn't Memphis just do Atlanta's negotiating for them?

Is Memphis just trying to look like they are trying to land someone so their fans don't kill them or is this an offer the Hawks may pass on?

Also - doesn't Smith have to sign the offer first?

Just playing poker. Atlanta seems to have the better hand, in that they can match any offer made to Smith. Atlanta has placed their first bet- saying they WILL match any offer made to Smith, and Memphis has just called them and raised them a legit contract, to see whether or not Atlanta really means it, or if they are just bluffing.

As Briggs speculates- Memphis lets its fans know they are really trying to improve their team, but they don't put out a crazy bank breaking Isiah-type offer for Smith, a player who can fit in well with their young team.

Maybe Memphis knows something about Atlanta's thought process that we are not privy to, and believe that Atlanta just doesn't want Smith at the contract Memphis has proposed.

Has Atlanta put out any info on what they might be willing to pay Smith? They are going to be facing hell from their fans is Smith and Childress are gone one year after Atlanta finally made it into the playoffs after a long drought.

I would be surprised if Atlanta does not match the contract.

If Memphis lands Smith (doubtful), it opens up trade possibilities (Memphis would have excess, ATL would have deficit):

New York Knicks

Incoming Players
Antoine Walker
Salary: $9,052,460 Years Remaining: 3

Javaris Crittenton
Salary: $1,381,560 Years Remaining: 1

Greg Buckner
Salary: $4,010,005 Years Remaining: 2

Outgoing Players: Zach Randolph, Mardy CollinsMemphis Grizzlies

Incoming Players
Zach Randolph
Salary: $14,666,667 Years Remaining: 3

Mardy Collins
Salary: $1,034,760 Years Remaining: 1

Outgoing Players: Antoine Walker, Javaris Crittenton, Greg Buckner

Why: Get Crittenden, a guy they won't fit into the lineup. Cut year 3 salary by 5.5. They get a low post presence in Zach.

or

dump Eddy/Mardy for ZaZa & Acie Law

I'd much rather have Memphis lose out on Smith because then they'll still need a PF and we might be able to swing something from them for Zach and or possibly D-Lee or maybe even Big Fat Eddy.

no chance MEM will be interested in Zach... they just unloaded a better player in Gasol a year ago for draft picks to get rid of his albatross.

And I don't think Walsh is interested in moving Zach. I have a feeling that at most, we might see Marbury released

i think he's very interested in moving Zach, just that he's not getting any offers that are worth anything other than for garbage in return most likely.

i agree about Marbury, i think he'll be released before the season begins.
